FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JC: We wanted to give the door handle a nature-inspired, sculptural form. Our aim was to transform an emotion, a material, and a texture into a spontaneous and durable shape.
FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JC: Our goal is to create an innovative handle through a new decorativism that combines the sculptural and functional aspects of form.
FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JC: We are planning to expand our functional sculpture collections every year. We will give priority to materials and shapes that create a unique atmosphere. As for the Prisma door handle, we will further develop the existing color ranges.
FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JC: The design and production of the Prisma door handle took about 6 months.
FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
JC: We actually followed an inspiration.
FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
JC: Every item created in our laboratory is designed exclusively by us.
FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JC: We designed this door handle because we believe it is an important furnishing accessory, a special piece of furniture that can enhance the environment and even the quality of life.
FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
JC: Many 20th century Western artists believed in the idea that they should not invent anything in their work as they were creators of copies of nature. Our creations are inspired by the art and architecture world.
FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JC: Our works are aimed at a niche clientele, and, even more so, to anyone who understands the importance of furnishing and research.
FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JC: Our project stands out thanks to its unexpected study of shape and innovative finishes we have applied to it.
FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JC: We chose this name "PRISMA oro" (gold prism) because we were inspired by its geometric shape and finish.
FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JC: A white sheet of paper and a pencil. In our laboratory, we created a 3D-dimensional object by using traditional sculpture techniques. Then, we scanned and aligned it to the support so that it become a functional sculpture. The 3D print of the pair of handles was then used as a resin mold with which the foundry could carry out the sand casting.
FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JC: The most important aspects of our work is the creation by hand of functional sculptures for spaces, small series that focus on details and personalized finishes.
FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JC: For the creation of this handle, we collaborated with several highly specialized technical laboratories and studios.
FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JC: We used technology for the 3D scans, in the fitting of the supports in line with our sculptures, using 3D modeling software, and high-resolution 3D printers.
FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
JC: We did not rely on analytical research, in our design process we seek signature aesthetics in which functionality and sculpture come together to produce an artistic and authentic object.
FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JC: We faced many technical challenges. They were necessary to allow us to give the handle unusual and more elaborated shapes. Some of them were the undercuts and elaborate textures. Sometimes, we had to look for new foundries.
FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JC: We decided to present this project because we believe that our work should be enhanced and known as much as possible. We aim to achieve this by offering several fresh and original furnishings. This award allowed exactly this.
FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JC: We discovered endless possibilities and techniques to use metals. We also realized there are many things, which can be designed and realized, that don't exist yet.
