RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Visual research was conducted on vintage bandanas, specifically those made by The Elephant Brand. Bandanas originate in India, but in the 1900's The Elephant Brand in New York City reimagined it. The designs, colors, and prints have since become a staple of Americana.
For the typography, research was conducted on another symbol of Americana: wood type broadsides posters. We looked at the work of historic foundries and printing presses such as Hamilton Wood Type in Wisconsin and Hatch Show Print in Tennessee.
CHALLENGE: Together with the client, we positioned the event as a fun way to spend an evening and give to charity at the same time. In a big city, the country theme is quaint and novel. In the poster, we had to get the county fair theme across, communicate the fun factor, and establish value as a charitable event.
