| DESIGN NAME: Berfend Breakfast Knife PRIMARY FUNCTION: Breakfast Knife INSPIRATION: It is hard to get foods like honey and jam with a knife. This problem can usually be solved by adding an extra spoon on the table or spinning the knife not to pour the liquid out. This product is specially designed for dealing with that matter and decreasing the number of tableware to be used. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The knife is a combination of the forms of a knife and a spoon together in one. Using this product, The user doesn't need to spin the knife over and over. The product simply enables the user to get the liquid food easily by the spoon-like curve it has. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The user holds the knife as a spoon(not vertical as a knife) and puts it into the liquid food. The spoon-like curve will have the liquid food inside its scoop. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2013 in Turkey and finished in January 2014 in Turkey. It was exhibited in IMMIB industrial design competition, awarded a 1st prize. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Stainless steel is used to produce this product because it's the perfect material for a tableware. It's durable, easy to produce and common material in this area. While producing, Pressing Method is used. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Concave shaped knife for liquid foods / 170 mm x 19 mm x 5 mm / The package is a cardboard. Its a green design. TAGS: idea, help, problem, creative, new, product, solution, design, easy, knife, breakfast, honey, jam RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I realized a need for a product in a breakfast table. I searched and observed people had difficulty eating honey and jam with a knife. They were dropping the knife and taking the spoon instead. I came up with the idea that a single product can be used for both purposes. I produced a very first prototype to see how my design functions. I have bought a stainless steel knife and bend it with the help of a pressing machine and sharpened the edges to have a better shape. The testing of the product on marmalade worked very well. The new curved shape helped the liquid hold on the knife. CHALLENGE: I searched for the production methods to make a curve on a stainless steel knife. I observed the easiest way to produce my design which is pressing method because Berfend knife is designed for solving a specific problem, therefore, it should be accessible for economically every type of person.
