DESIGN NAME: Better-Ray
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Battery packaging
INSPIRATION: I always had hard times with battery packages. First, the experience of opening the package is tough. Second, once opened, the broken package will lose the function to hold the left batteries. And it's also hard to organize used ones. Last, most of the package of battery are not well designed. All the reasons above triggered me to improve the design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In reality, the popular battery packages transits a feeling of heavy jobs and pollution. On the contrary, the idea of Better-Ray's package started from being friendly to users and environment, its graphic is bright and delight so as to match the personality. The engineering circuit diagram shows how a battery works, and the switch can connected to different circuits. This idea came from the history of battery. They are firstly used in mp3 players, who brought people music—With or Without You. With the battery, there will be not only electric, but music, love and life.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The revolution is that the package can contain both new and used batteries without mixing them. Users no longer need to get a new box to hold the used ones. The special structure allows users of all ages apply it without thinking or remembering, because it has settled the actions of use. For example, there is only one way to take a battery out or put one inside, and when all new batteries had been taken out, the separating paper will drop to the bottom showing that all products were used. In the end, the user only need to take the box to recycle, all the batteries are in.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2015 in New York and finished in May 2015 in New York.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To make the package easily manufactured and eco-friendly, I used simple hard paper only. In the box, the batteries have only one-way in and one-way out. It helps the user organize new batteries and used ones by separating them with a piece of paper. When all the products had been used, the paper drops to the bottom which prevent the inside batteries being taken out. Then the user can recycle the whole box. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This is a school project in School of Visual Arts. I picked battery package design because most of them in the market are dull. Moreover, the used batteries are always bother me. I decided to create a package with a function of organize both new and used batteries, but is extremely easy to use. I made some research and found that paper box is most accessible, functional and cheap material to apply. In the end, it lives up to the standard of preserving, carrying, organizing and appealing.
CHALLENGE: What makes package design different from graphic design is the functionality. The package of Better-ray should not only match the level of professional graphic design, but also has a excellent user experience. This package is not just a box, but a vending machine that let users get what they want without thinking about how to interact.
