Interview with Qiushuo Li at Wednesday 30th of September 2015

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
QL: A package that can be easily used by children, elders, or blinds people. The users can get what they want without thinking.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
QL: The structure is the key to achieve the function, that make sure users only get new batteries out.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
QL: I would like to applying for a patten and drive the awareness of the sustainable design.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
QL: It takes me about two weeks.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
QL: The trigger is my bad experience with the battery packaging in the market. The dull design and poor function drove me to redesign it.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
QL: It is not being produced or used by any companies, but I would like to sell the patent.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
QL: I always challenge myself in different categories of design. However, I believe even if the form varied, the soul of design doesn't change, which is how we love and care about the world. The metrology of solving problems can be applied to any platform, too. The style and form of this case is basing on the innovation of better user experience.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
QL: I figured out the design all by myself. However, technically speaking, there's hardly any designer in the world that can create great design without seeing any visual productions. I view some certain website everyday and collect the great one for inspiring. I am influenced by other designs of course, but in this case, not a particular one.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
QL: The battery users.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
QL: As I believe, the structure is unique because it rules the moving direction of the batteries inside. And there is only one way to get the batteries in and out. I haven's seen any design with the same function.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
QL: Better-ray sounds like battery, which means the product can provide a better service.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
QL: I used Adobe softwares to design; hard boards to build the prototype; Nikon camera to shoot the video.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
QL: As I see it, the structure of the box is innovative. It can contain both new and used batteries and can remind the user when all the new batteries are taken away. The piece of hard board inside prevent any used batteries coming out, ensures no single used batteries come to polluting the earth.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
QL: I did everything all by myself, and got some advices from two instructors, who are Wen Che and Kevin Brainard.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
QL: It makes the structure working.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
QL: No, it was driven from personal experience.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
QL: Finding a appropriate design style for the graphic on the package.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
QL: To get exposure.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
QL: I learned that there is a reason behind every factor in design.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
QL: No, thank you.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
