DESIGN NAME: Airland Hotel Shenzhen
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hotel
INSPIRATION: In the pure white space, wood grains and shadows become the dominant lines in the lobby. As the guestroom is very small, the open-style design was adopted to maximize the light effect in space expansion. The sunlight splashes through the white sheer onto the wall and floor, with the change of time, creating different shadows and lines as in an abstract painting. The color scheme of the restaurant seeks its inspiration from sea life, which is the theme of the western restaurant.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Airland Hotel is a small-scale resort hotel. As it was a renovation project, the total budget was quite challenging. Designers made the best use of the existing space, which is shaped by the curvy architecture. The complicated design was abandoned; instead, natural landscape and sunlight are introduced into interior while keeping the openness and ventilation of the atrium and its surrounding. The design intent was to achieve a pure, natural and romantic ambience with minimum budget.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: What is worth mentioning is that in the buffer zone between the atrium and the western styled restaurant, a natural screen resembling a bamboo forest, is artfully created with minimum cost, accented with a sea creature-like light fixture. The screen provides certain privacy and also delivers elegant ambience. The color scheme of the restaurant seeks its inspiration from sea life, which is the theme of the western restaurant. Meanwhile, most of the original European classical stairs are transformed into white and minimalist bowl-like Bird Nest forms, which are integrated into the wavy architecture, pure and unique, providing a visual focus for the atrium.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2013 and finished in April 2014 , and is located on the Dameisha Golden Coast in eastern Shenzhen, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As the guestroom is very small, the open-style design was adopted to maximize the light effect in space expansion. The sunlight splashes through the white sheer onto the wall and floor, with the change of time, creating different shadows and lines as in an abstract painting. Considering the financial cost and design intent, the wall and ceiling are mostly finished by the simplest material, white paint, and the flooring is finished by local materials. While pursuing a pure and minimal space, the details of the design are well crafted. The color transition brings with it the change of materials - reflective glass, matt stone surfaces and natural linen textures contrast with each other; glossy stones contrasting with wood grain gradations enrich the layers and the texture of the space; the scattered pendants illuminating the atrium give the impression of different sea animals happily swimming in a wavy sea.
