DESIGN NAME: Buhaus
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bird house
INSPIRATION: The idea of an owl within an owl was irresistible. The shape was also dictated by the needs of the bird, with a mouth opening resembling a tree burrow and feet gripping on a bar of an appropriate size for the real feet of the owl to grip on. The eyes were an important part of the design. Because they are a signature element in the physiology of the owl and because the object would aspire to be celebrating man and bird, the eyes are also infused with a human feel.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Buhaus aims to bridge the needs of a small owl and the couple that saved it. They wanted the owl to be free in their small apartment, and have a place to rest and feel safe. It also serves as a decorative object. Buhaus is a stylized shape that gets inspiration from the occupant, and is specifically designed for it. The wooden bar serves as a visual suggestion of feet on a branch, also as a landing place for the actual owl. Buhaus is a personality infused, custom made, decorative bird house.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Buhaus can be used purely as an indoor decorative object, or as a personality infused, owl inspired bird house for both indoor and outdoors. It is a place birds can land on, take shelter in and use as a nesting burrow. The back is flat so it can be easily and stably be hung on a wall. Used as a decorative object indoor, can be used to house a special object and/or to place colorful toy birds, or as a scarf/tie hanger.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project took two months to complete, and ended in May 2014. All design and construction work was done in Bucharest, Romania.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Buhaus is basically papier mache with some twists. First I sculpted a mold in styrofoam and then added layers of three different types of paper, gypsum, water and glue. The back was cut from plywood and reinforcements, feet and landing beam were made of wood. Used materials and coatings that would be both nontoxic and as close a match to the bird's natural burrow. Paper, wood and water based paints for construction and wood bark for the bedding inside. It was all hand made and the resulting surface is uneven and textured.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 44cm x 20cm x 34cm (W, D, H) with wood bar
26cm x 18cm x 34cm (W, D, H) without landing bar

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Searching for a different way to design and build a traditional design object, the bird house.
CHALLENGE: The challenge here was to develop something that would appeal to both bird and man. That would work indoor as a decorative object and anywhere as a bird house. The challenge was more difficult since both people that commissioned it are artistically gifted.
