| DESIGN NAME: Exploded Chair PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair INSPIRATION: The chair is inspired by the long process behind the creation of furniture often taken for granted. Craftsmanship was one of the strongest elements of Indonesian designs. Many craftsmen could make furniture, sculpture, or building with high attention to detail. However, the quality of Indonesian handicrafts has been decreasing as time goes by and has made its value continue to decline. The aim is to appreciate and bring back the passion of craftsmen so they can create more high detailed products, especially in the context of furniture. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The chair attempts to depict the assembly process so the user can know how the craftsmen turn raw materials into the final product. To give chairs a clean and neat appearance, the joint system, which is one of the most important parts of a chair, is usually hidden. However, in this chair, every joint system is visible. This is done by using solid wood combined with clear resin. Dowels used to strengthen the systems are also visible. By accentuating parts typically hidden, Exploded Chair portrays how sketches are turned into a real products. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The chair is usable and can support the weight of one person. However, this chair will make the user feel insecure and aware about the process when sitting on it. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2012 in Bandung, Indonesia and finished in March 2013 in Bandung, Indonesia. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product is made of local materials in Indonesia, which are Sungkai wood with natural finish and clear resin. It is processed with standard and traditional manufacturing method, including resin casting and wood carving. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 450mm x Depth 510mm x Height 770mm. Seat height 450mm TAGS: wood, transparent, resin, joint, craftsman, exploded RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Developing a product that can connect the designer, the craftsman, and the user. The design of the chair is based on its technical drawings itself because technical drawing is tool to connect the designer to the craftsman. Among many types of technical drawings, exploded view drawing was chosen to become the basic of the chair in order to accentuate the assembly process and connect the user to the craftsman. The user can see how the chair is assembled and aware about the one who assemble it. CHALLENGE: Combining wood and resin precisely is the most challenging step because all parts are formed manually. The craftsmen had to create the parts in the right measurement so every part can fit to the other parts perfectly and make the chair strong and stable.
