DESIGN NAME: WORLD CUP SPORTV´S STUDIO
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Glass studio
INSPIRATION: The idea behind the project was to build a revolving glass and metal structure hemisphere inspired on a football, underscoring delicate and lightweight shapes but focusing on framing flexibility. The design project took advantage of the plasticity and mobility that water reflections would provide to the structure.
The Fiscal Island was chosen due to its strategic location at Guanabara Bay, entryway to Rio de Janeiro City and historic site. The view of iconic landmarks as Christ the Redeemer, The Sugar Loaf, the historic downtown area, Rio de Janeiro-Niteroi Bridge and Santos Dumont Airport is amazing from the island. The location was the main concept idea behind the studio: panoramic 360 ˚view in harmony with the city.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: SporTV embarked in an unprecedented project and overcame great technical challenges to host part of the 2014 World Cup coverage from Fiscal Island, in downtown Rio de Janeiro. The studio that took inspiration in contemporary architecture master pieces, became integrated to the city through the reflections in the water and brought together modern elements and materials to the classic architecture of the castle in Fiscal Island. A semicircular glass and metal structure near Guanabara Bay´s margin was one of the channel´s 24 hour live coverage stages.
More than two years’ worth of preparation, a large crew of professionals involved in the project, SporTV programming for Fiscal Island reviews and rating success had a little helping hand: the amazing Guanabara Bay as a background. The turning base glass studio seemed in perfect harmony with the city and featured a 360˚ panoramic perspective providing viewers endless combinations of the beautiful landmarks of the city like the Sugar Loaf, Christ The Redeemer, Santos Dumont Airport and Rio-Niterói Bridge.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The first negotiations with the Brazilian Navy for the project construction at Fiscal Island in Rio de Janeiro started in 2012. The studio was part of the live 2014 FIFA World Cup anchor shows programming. The iron and glass structure set up took one month approximately and ran nonstop for 36 days supporting most of Sportv cable channel 24 hour programming until the studio was dismantled in august, 2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 360 ˚rotation solutions for the internal stage floor in the study made endless scene framings possible. Temperature control, reflections, light and acoustics tests and studies were run and engineering solutions put in place to lift the studio one meter up to make room for the cooling systems and for the internal stage rotation mechanism.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 80m2 of iron and glass automatized revolving floor platform hemispheric studio.
