RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We researched for an object that could make a link between the purpose of the festival and the location for the installation, the airport. Therefore, came across the idea of making an installation with paper aeroplanes which have the meaning of Youth, Creativity and Freedom in the Japanese culture. The next step was to sketch and design a 3d model in order to develop its form and position, and also the position of the paper planes, heights and quantity. At this point, it was essential to transmit the idea that the planes were flying up, creating a parallelism with the festival motto, enhance Creativity and impel young Artists.
CHALLENGE: We wanted to create an emotional connection with the spectator by using a childhood handmade toy, a paper aeroplane. The main challenge was designing an eye catching installation drawing people’s attention within a limited area of 3m x 3m at the Arrivals Terminal of Oporto Airport. The result was a suspended organic form, a 3 dimensional skin, which could be explored all around and was always changing with the action of wind and people passing through. When approaching the installation we see a wave formed by the repetition of the planes in a degrade of heights. Another big challenge was to develop a system to ensure transport and assemblage on site.
