DESIGN NAME: Dicecal
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Calendar
INSPIRATION: The necessity to create a creative design calendar arrows during a preuniversity project in December 2013. After thorough research I decided not to go with a simply decorative but rather come up with a multipurpose paper sculpture of some sort.
Inspired by my gamer friends who were constantly in need of new dice since the old ones seemed to disappear so easily. This led me to begin thinking of a multipurpose die of some sort that would not be lost or forgotten and could be used as some sort of an office supply or home decor.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 3D Calendar with a hint of role-playing games.
Each of the twelve sides refers to the months of the year and also shows graphics of different playing dice. The numbers shown in these dice-images are randomized in a way to ensure maximum potential probability. E.g. the image of a two sided die contains both 1 and 2 six times.
Images of the dice on each side, the number-randomization and the calendar typography have all been uniquely designed by me for this particular project.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Basically, this is a desk calendar, fit for any geeky :) office or desk. It's main purpose thus is to show the months of the year and weeks/days of the month.
It is much more however since it also can be rolled and used as multiple varieties of gaming dice. On every side of it there are several numbers (apart form the numbers used in the calendar part). After every roll you get random numbers - just like when using several sided role-playing dice.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2013 and finished in May 2014. It has been tested at a small gaming convention in Debrecen, Hungary in September 2014. There have been some modifications recently and I am working on some other colour/paper variations.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Origami with the use of paper that weighs 120-320 g/m2.
For my first model I used several sketches and made five different templates. Rough sketches are hand-drawn, digitized and vectorized using Corel Draw. Via creating the calendar I used PF Handbook Pro font. The stilized die design have been then applied.
The template has been then cut, folded and glued by hand. After the prints have been completed it takes approx. 30-45 mins to complete a single die.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The first and main design is about 8 centimeters high and tall and the length of the edges are 32 mm. I have made a larger variation with the height and width of 13 centimeters wth the edge-length of 46 mm and there are two colour varieties too; black with white letters and the inverse. The weight is neglegable since it is made of paper.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Most of the research have been conducted by browsing creative calendar and DIY websites and at the same time interviewing a few of my role-playing friends about a few of my original sketch ideas.
I came across some varieties of base templates for my twelve sided design that I have tested and by empiric evaluation (size, rollability and difficulty of folding) I settled with my final one.
With a distinct image of the final outcome in my head I researched fonts using the following parameters: sans serif, harmonic numbers based on DIN fonts.
CHALLENGE: The first obstacle was to come over the problem of usability, transportability and creativity at the same time. I also haven't found any similar projects during my research so every step was of a pilgrim's.
The final challenge was executing the cutting and folding since it requires extreme precision and quite some practices especially when folding together the last 3 sides.
