DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Cafe Bord de Mer

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Interior Design / Hotel Causal Dining

INSPIRATION:
The design idea comes from the ocean. The concept of the signature columns come up with the tradition of “Message in a Bottle”, that is, people make a wish and put the message in a bottle, and tossed it into the ocean. The feature columns appear to be rolls of letter papers tiding with a metal string, it also presents fascinating lighting effect which highlights the surfaces of the columns.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Café bord de Mer reflects an oasis of calm and a dignified lifestyle. Full-length windows are built to maximize the South China Sea view. The restaurant adopted an open idea layout with interactive cooking stations and timber finishes. Ceiling is topped with massive wood blinds, which split up the sun rays. Beyond the eatery is a relaxing lounge bar. Idea of the signature columns is inspired by the “Message in a Bottle”: People put a wish in a bottle, and tossed it into the ocean, so that the columns appear to be the shape of rolls of letter papers tiding with a metal string.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The design creates a range of spatial experiences for the guests and vistors, the indoor eatery area to give guests a comfortable space to enjoy the meal, the pre-dinner drinks in the cozy bar provides a quiet space to chat and relax, the outdoor sitting also provides another space to experience a seashore enviornment.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project is located in Hong Kong, and the work is started in November 2011 until November 2012.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Materials such as apple wood veneer, stone, wood furniture, soft feather down cushion, feature lighting are being used to create a coastal and holiday atmosphere.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The indoor dining area is 13.4M x 45.8M. Since the 5.8M full height clear glass glazing window is east-facing, strong sunlight always shines into the interior during day time. Part of the ceiling as well as all the window area is topped with massive wood blinds. It is designed to split up and scatter the sun rays into the space.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Ideas were inspired by the ocean. The use of colors and decoration are related by the sea and shore, such as the white and navy blue, as well as the shell decors. Special idea also comes up with an ocean related tradition, that is, the “Message in a Bottle”, people put a message in a bottle, make a wish and tossed it into the ocean. The columns inside the space is made like a roll of white paper, tiding with a silver band like the letter inside the message bottle. With a fascinating lighting effect, this artistic feature becomes the highlight inside the restaurant.

CHALLENGE:
The project was completed on a limited budget and had the constraints of the building being listed. Design needs to be as efficient as possible Choosing furniture and materials were also carefully done to represent the functional character of the restaurant.
