| DESIGN NAME: SPRING chair PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair INSPIRATION: The inspiration of Spring came from the fascination of materials and how things are made and put together. The solid wood connection between the plywood seat and the legs is shown whereas it is normally hidden. This integration gives the chair a unique and honest typology. The solid wood connection provides both visual and actual stability to its user. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: SPRING is an all-wood cantilever chair with an inviting and playful appearance. The chair integrates solid wood and plywood in a unique way, as the changing direction of the grain gives the chair a subtle yet distinctive character. The plywood seat and dowel legs give an extra springiness to the chair, while the solid wood front edge provides a soft touch for the back of the knees. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Spring is a new type of all-wood cantilever chair made out of three separate parts- plywood seat, dowel legs, and a third solid wood part that integrates the two in a unconventional way. The unique connection provides the chair an extra spring for the seat and the back. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project stated in May 2014 and the working prototype was made in September 2014. The chair was first exhibited in London Design festival in September 2014. The improved version will be in Salone del Mobile in 2015 FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |

NAME: Andrew Cheng Industrial Design PROFILE: Currently based in San Francisco and Taiwan, Andrew Cheng graduated from the California College of the Arts in 2014 and studied at the Universität der Künste Berlin in 2012. His works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Milan Furniture Fair, San Francisco Design Week, and London Design Festival. |
