DESIGN NAME: The Shuttle Coffee Table
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table
INSPIRATION: 'The Shuttle' revives a 1991 Star Trek pinball by Data East. The shape of a landing shuttle from the Enterprise starship was a base, then the ratios, forms and sizes where modified to fit a coffee table.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This table is a one of a kind as it is. Not only does it feature an original Star Trek pinball playfield, with new electronic controls, and led lighting, but has four real meteorites built into it's back container. Also their are three lit Dilithium crystals to fuel this beauty - these where not easy to acquire, as they don't really exist.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Six lighting programs, lit meteorites and crystals in opening containers, red LED lighting under the table. The table rolls on it's wheels, and can be controlled with the buttons on the sides.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project took 390 working hours to complete, starting during July 2014. It was first shown at the PlayIt 2014 gameshow in Budapest.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The body is multi-layered MDF. Creating a relatively complex form out of MDF was a great challenge, and achieving a perfect glossy finish also took a lot of time. The lighting is converted to LED technology, and is controlled by a custom made panel. The table boasts a Muoninalusta, a Chelyabinsk, a Moldavite and Indochynite meteorites, and three Dilithium crystals.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Height 540 mm Length 1470 mm Width 715 mm Weight 50 Kg

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Pinball culture is experiencing a true rennesaince, with new manufacturers appearing (Jersey Jack), dead ones coming back to life (Bally), and old ones growing in business (Stern). As the market shifts from arcades to private collections and gamerooms, it was a logical to step at the perfect time for AFs owner Andras Lacfi to design and build a handful of these beauties for fans other than himself, and take the art of these wonderful machines to another level.
CHALLENGE: The greatest challenge was to create such a shape and form from MDF, then to achieve a perfect glossy finish. Purchasing the right size and shape meteorites was also an adventure, not to mention organizing Dilithium, which simply does not exist in our universe. Merging different shuttle and pod designs also took a long time, as neither shape provided sufficient ratios for a furniture. Weight issues are always a challenge for us, and remain so.
