DESIGN NAME: The Droid
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table
INSPIRATION: Our journey reviving pinballs, and the story of Collection MMXV: Arcade Resurrection began when owner Andras Lacfi bought a pub-trodden version of the famed 1987 FIRE! Pinball by Williams. The game was falling apart, but the playfield art by Gary Oursler was jawdropping. In a desperate attempt to salvage the best bit, the idea of a coffe table came. We did our best. The tables are becoming more and more complex, hopefuly showing our love for these vintage wonders, and the art they carry.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As this baby is the only lovechild of a Star Wars pinball and R2D2, we are very proud of this one of a kind darling. Rolling on her own wheels, featuring a mini slideprojector (picturing R2 in the Death Stars sewage), a flashlight, sounds, lighting programs, and a fully functional animated droid on the playfield, she is destined to go on and do great things!
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Six LED lighting programs, animated robot, Hologram slides projection unit, rolling wheels, robot sounds, illuminated bottom with projected logo.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: 321 hours of manufacturing time
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Fine Arts and Art Installation Design

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Pinball culture is experiencing a true rennesaince, with new manufacturers appearing (Jersey Jack), dead ones coming back to life (Bally), and old ones growing in business (Stern). As the market shifts from Arcades to private collections and gamerooms, it was a logical to step at the perfect time for AFs owner Andras Lacfi to design and build a handful of these beauties for fans other than himself, and take the art of these wonderful machines to another level.
CHALLENGE: Fully hand built without a scaled plan, our workshop was only supplied with a sketch. With all accents and parts hand cut from wood, and painted with automotive grade polish, our manufacturing surpassed itself. Some parts where converted from toys, others specifically built. Enconmpassing the very deep playfield without exceeding dimensions also prooved to be difficult.
