DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Contrapposto

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Side Table

INSPIRATION:
Inspired by sculptures of Polykleitos and with a desire to explore the dynamics and balance between lines and masses, this artifact is an experiment to fuse together modern architectural techniques and traditional sculptural concepts in a timeless design.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A side table manifests its contrapposto in formality and materiality with both contemporary fabrication technique and traditional wood finish. Composed with three anthropomorphic legs and ruled by a primitive geometry of cylinder, its topology was revealed through lamination of Baltic birch veneers; tabletop, an expression of circular geometry, is laminated with walnut burl. The table, finished with traditional French polishing technique, is a blend of architectonic and bourgeois.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This minimalist side table brings sophistication in complete harmony in any space it presents. The choice of natural materials with French polishing in shellac, along with unique surface shape of each leg, allows this side table to capture different shades of light, therefore adds a taste of aesthetic in atmosphere. Perfect fitting for all occasions.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in May 2014 and finished in August 2014, in Toronto.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Fine Arts and Art Installation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
A digital model was created in Maya with subdivision surfaces to generate a fluid dynamic geometry; then Boolean action ruled by a primitive Cylinder shape was created in Rhino. A hybrid of digital fabrication (CNC) and traditional French Polishing was used to result a chatoyancy effect in materiality. 2x18mm Baltic Birch plywood was milled down and laminated in a process of subtraction at a wood factory to increase efficiency in CNC milling, and then refined by hand processing for perfection.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Diameter 381mm (Width 381mm x Depth 381 mm) Height 467mm Material: Baltic Birch, Walnut Burl Finishing Material: Shellac Finishing Techniques: French Polishing Weight: 12.2 kg

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Researched digital fabrication to assemble 3D milled pieces and wood finishing techniques. To investigate ways to fuse traditional wood finishing technique, abstract design, and new fabrication technique. To increase efficiency, the plywood was first laminated at a wood factory into 2x18mm. The 3D model was also sectioned into 36mm depth to allow precise milling by CNC machine. These pieces were assembled into the intended design and then hand processed and traditional French polishing technique.

CHALLENGE:
The main challenge lies in carrying out a conceptual design into an artifact with limitations in fabrication of real world. These include understand the properties of different materials and select the most appropriate one, utilize with limited tolerance of CNC machine, balance automation and handcrafts in production, and finally bring each step of the process s.a. sanding, laminating, assembling and finish testing into a harmonious artifact.
