DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Felt spirals Necklace

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Necklace

INSPIRATION:
Felt is a wonderful material. It is warm, light and colorful. Working with felt can become an incredible experience since it is not just a common fabric. It is thick, steady and can be formed in many shapes. One of them is the spiral. Spiral is a very common shape and we can find it in nature. It's widely used in Greek art from the ancient years until nowadays.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The main idea is to make an impressive necklace with common shapes using simple materials and tools. Spiral is a common shape and it is challenging to find a way to use it in order to create something unique. The necklace is made of felt but the first impression might be tricky. People don't understand that it is just fabric. Due to its material the necklace is lightweight and can easily change position on the bust. It's a challenge to make it look correct no matter how it stands on the bust.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This object can't transform but it fits on the bust in many ways since one can wear it symmetricaly or not, as shown in the main photo of the presentation.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This necklace was first created in 2012 with different materials. This first version was presented in the exhibition "Greek Design equals Good Design" in Athens (December 2013). The version presented here was created during 2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
This design is the result of a long research on easy to use materials. The main components of the necklace are beads made out of hand rolled felt pieces, chosen, cut and rolled by the designer. The felt can be either synthetic or woollen. The finishing of the necklace is a high quality synthetic silk cord (rayon). This piece is in purple shades but the necklace can be made in many colour variations.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
There are no standard dimensions for this necklace. Average minimum inside perimeter of the necklace can be any size between 60-65 cm (to fit comfortable over normal sized head) and maximum length 95 cm.

TAGS:
felt necklace, felt jewellery, contemporary jewellery, silk rope, felt

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This piece of jewellery was created while searching for new materials that combine good quality, great variety of colours, convenience and good price. The main idea of this design was the creation of a necklace that is easy to wear and can be produced by one person with simple tools and low cost materials. This is a necklace created for every woman and those who own a piece feel very satisfied.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest part of this design activity was the selection of the materials since there are plenty of felt fabrics in the market that don't have good quality. It took a long time to test different types of felt (syntetic or woollen) to see how they behave during time.
