DESIGN NAME: Sense
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Logo
INSPIRATION: Our creation was heavily influenced by Zen Buddhism, which emphasizes on the attainment of enlightenment. Eastern philosophy states: ‘one creates two; two produces three; three gives birth to all things’. The Chinese word ‘san’ (Chinese word for ‘Three’) is an utmost important number in traditional Eastern mindset: It is related to everything in our universe. The corresponding English name ‘SENSE’ refers to intuition, a stage higher than knowledge, imagination and inspiration, and closely reflects the phonetic pronunciation of its Chinese counterpart – ‘san xiang san’.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: SENSE (Chinese name ‘san xiang san’) is China’s top-level Buddhist statue, items and aloeswood store. The logo we created represents Eastern thinking: Although one does not completely see the three hills (in the logo), partially covered by 'clouds', there are nonetheless present. With a pure heart, one ‘sees’ things in the most beautiful and peaceful way. It conveyed the essence of its products; that is based on wisdom, beliefs, spiritual metaphysics, or simply nature of reality.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The logo communicates well with the audience, even those who don't know much about Zen philosophy. People with relative background are strongly impressed and deeply interact with the brand.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We did a lot of research on the project including industrial background, Dug deep into the corporate philosophy of the client and discussed a lot with the client. One thing is clear since the beginning of the project: The logo shall convey the sense of "Zen" philosophy. After several rounds of discussion, we developed the present logo which represents the Eastern and Buddhist thinking: although one does not completely see the three hills (in the logo), partially covered by 'clouds', there are nonetheless present.
CHALLENGE: How to express the Zen philosophy and creates strong perception simply through a logo design is the biggest challenge.
