DESIGN NAME: Cloche Sofa
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Modular sofa
INSPIRATION: I got the inspiration for this design from the old sewage pipe of New York that for the past three years are been in construction, waiting to be replaced with new one.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Cloche Sofa is a body of work that transmutes an element of urban life into objets d’art. It can be used as a sculpture, ambient light or a modular sofa. It represents landscape evolution that dismantles established structural standards and elements of construction materials, and repurposes a found material into sophisticated design, reshaping a common object into a meaningful amalgam.
This piece harnesses objects that outlived their original uses, were discarded, reclaimed and renovated.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: -
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in 2013 in New York City, ongoing experimentation with different material and sizes: Arm Chair, Sofa for 3 people.
Status: Patent Pending
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Fine Arts and Art Installation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A New York sewage pipe transformed into an urban sculpture of a fully-functional modular sofa. I am also working on production of the Cloche Sofa from the following materials: wood, stainless steel, concrete and marble. All of these materials are present in existing construction materials or natural environment in cylindrical shape. The production of the Cloche sofa is being done by cutting the sewage pipe with a plasma cutter, and welding the structure of the back seat piece to the body of the tube, adding the mechanical system that would allow the rotation and locking of the back seat in position. The tube shape is accented by LED side panels and the conic footing. This renders the object’s hybrid functionality almost invisible, unnoticeable at the first glance.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: The critical part of this design has been the structural and mechanical.
How to rotate the upper part, and lock in both direction when is open. Calculate the resistence of the material and create a sort of mechanical
