DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Orbits

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Board Game

INSPIRATION:
We are fascinated from the endless universe. We decided to design an infinite board game that takes inspiration from the orbits in space.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Orbits is a board game which aims to develop strategical thinking and hand-eye coordination. Orbits improves logical, kinesthetic, spatial intelligence. It is designed for increasing creative thinking, problem solving, determination, observation, social abilities. The game offers endless variety of combinations. Moreover, comparing to other board games in the market, orbits provides 3 dimensional perception skills.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The right move is to stabilise a curve without contacting it with others. The starter player is determined by using the color chart and must make the move from his color defined area. The next player should pass his curve above or over the previous fixed curve. Players are permitted to touch the curves. In the case of contact of a curve with other, the turn passes to the next player. The first player who stabilizes all his/her curves becomes the winner. If the game gets stucked, the player with less curves left in his hand becomes the winner.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2013 in Izmir - Turkey. It won the first prize in Istanbul Minerals and Metals Exporters' Associations 10th Industrial Design Competition under the category of Concept 2014: Mind Developing Toy Design

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Toy, Games and Hobby Products Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Plastic is used as the main material. The body is made of ABS. The orbit curves are silicon covered steel wires. The packaging is made of PET (Polietilen tetraftalat) . The production method used for the upper part of body is plastic enjection. Silicon enjection molding is applied to orbit curves . The packaging is going to be produced by using thermoforming.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Dimensions: 300 mm x 300 mm x 25 mm Length of curves: 300 mm - r:1 mm / 250 mm - r:1 mm / 200 mm - r: 1mm / 150 mm - r:1 Orbits is suitable for 2-4 players and people 8 ages and over. Orbit curves are 128 pieces including 4 different colors and dimensions. The product is the package itself which contains the curves and the playing guide booklet. The product will be presented in a preservative package in stores.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The starting point of our research was the desk research. We analyzed and tried to combine many intelligence types to create an innovative board game. Another important part of our research was market study which allowed us to see different type of games and toys. As our target group has a wide range including children and adults, we interviewed with pedagogues and educationists. After first sketches, we mainly focused on model making and gameplay scenarios. We made different material combinations for the best result of curves and base.

CHALLENGE:
The most challenging part of the design process was to design a board game that never made before.Creating the base according to the coordinate system and deciding length and number of curves were enforcing. We tried hard while searching for the best material which suits our curves: the steel wraparound wire. We played the game on mock up model for weeks and tried to create different scenarios and the perfect gameplay.Another challenge was to reduce the manufacturing steps and cost in terms of sustainability.
