DESIGN NAME: Kaari
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Analogue watch
INSPIRATION: Nowadays there are plenty of both analogue and digital watches on the market and, perhaps, the latter, due to their electronic nature, being the most creative and unusual in the ways they indicate the time, while the analogue watches have made very few steps forward in this aspect. The design has been conceived to provide the analogue watches, as a category, with a different way of indicating the time thanks to a 24hour mechanism (half-speed hour hand).
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design is provided with two arc shaped die cuts. Through them, the turning hour and minute hands can be seen. The hour hand (disc) is divided in two segments of different colours that, rotating, indicate AM or PM time depending on the colour that starts being visible. The minute hand is visible through the bigger radius arc and determines which minute slot corresponds to the 0-30 minutes dials (located on the inner radius of the arc) and the 30-60 minutes slot (on the outer radius).
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This design provides the ability to indicating the time with a different way than others (and majority) analogue watches. The watch face is transformed into an upper layer that allows you can see the rotation of both hands.
It also offers us the chance to know which hours belong to the AM/PM by using color. The customers will have a unisex analogue watch with several models (black, white and white with colors in the hands), with a minimalist, curious, innovative and smart design.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2013 and finished in March 2014 in Madrid.

Case: 38-40 mm
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This design is based on a standard 24h analogue mechanism (half-speed hour hand) with only one half of the watch face being involved in indicating the time. The hour hand is designed as a disc divided in two equal segments of different colours that, rotating, indicate AM or PM hours, depending on the colour that starts being visible. The line between these two colours segments points to the exact hour. The minute hand (360 degrees per hour movement) indicates the minutes with his solid part.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The challenge pursued with this design is to provide "another voice" at the analogue watch. The main challenge was to find a way to bring an innovation design while maintaining readability and the possibility to produce it realistically. In this design was considered appropriate to use a mechanism 24 hours (commercially available by catalog) and his "hidden potential" to offer another way to indicating the time.
