DESIGN NAME: Athos
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee-table
INSPIRATION: My inspiration came from a children's handcraft consisting in four matchboxes glued together to build a table for a doll house, while the colours and shapes were inspired by the mosaic panels created by the Brazilian modernist artist Athos Bulcao.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The proposal of this piece of furniture is a coffe-table with hidden drawers, which recalls a mosaic panel. Due to the mosaic the table references a puzzle box. When closed, the drawers cannot be noticed.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: At a first glance the table looks like a solid mosaic panel. By pulling one side in the low relief carving, a drawer will open.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The first sketches of the table were made in January 2013. During 2013, as the research regarding Athos Bulcao's work deepened, some other furniture were created to experiment the composition of colours and shapes. The first prototype of the table is about to be finished.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: An easily manufacturable furniture. For the purposes of a perfect fit and unnoticeable drawers, it is of essence that all corners, including the frontal part of the drawers, are precisely cut at 45 degrees. The drawers run smoothly given the strong slides with automatic closing.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Lacquered MDF 18mm / 9mm
Width 120mm x Depth 120mm x High 28mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The idea of creating a table with hidden drawers recalling a panel, led us to research the work of Athos Bulcao, one of the most import modernist artists in Brazil. His mosaic panels appear in many important buildings projected by Niemeyer and Lucio Costa. Enhancing the grace of the city, his work is a relief for the eyes of the viewers embedded in the strong concrete architecture.
CHALLENGE: Our quest was to bring the beauty of Athos Bulcao's mosaic panels with their bright colours and perfect shapes to the inner space. During the development of the table design, while studying the shapes, we analysed the best use of the MDF slab to avoid waste of material.
