DESIGN NAME: Cerrada Reforma 108
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Single Family Home
INSPIRATION: The concept of the house parted from the idea of positive and negative space, seeking to create a game of counterparts to define and virtually contain the exterior space.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Cerrada Reforma is a residential project located in San Angel, in the south of Mexico City. The plot is rectangular and its dimensions are ten per twenty meters.
We decided to construct only half of the plot with a longitudinal block of 5 x 20 meters that corresponds to the house. The negative space is conceived as the open space or public area, which is contained but not occupied, it has exactly the same dimensions but is not built, creating a dialogue between this counterparts.
The built block dialogues with its open counterpart through a transparent façade all along the side, leaving open one of its faces. In this way, the only closed elements are the private areas such as bathrooms and kitchen.
The counterpart of the transparent façade is a solid wall with the same height that contains the open space. This helps close the visibility towards the neighbors, giving privacy to the house.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The built block dialogues whit its open counterpart through a transparent facade all along side. The negative space is conceived as the open space or public area, which is contained but not occupied, it has exactly the same dimensions but is not built, creating a dialogue between this counterparts.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Cerrada Reforma is a residential project located in San Angel, in the south of Mexico City. The project started in May 2011 and finished in July 2012.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The structure of the house was built of adobe block walls made in site. This allowed a significant cost saving, because the adobe is a traditional building material in Mexico made with sand, clay, water and organic material, molded with brick shaped and sun drying. Another positive factor of this material are its thermal properties as its keep the house warm in cold weather and cool in summer.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The plot is rectangular and its dimensions are ten per twenty meters. We decided to construct only half of the plot with a longitudinal block of five per twenty meters that corresponds to the house. The structure of the house was built of adobe block walls of ten per fifteen per twenty cm made in site. On floors were used materials like marble, wash concrete, quarry and wood. On the walls we used apparent concrete, vinyl paint, marble and tile.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In this project we try to experiment with a traditional lationamerican material: adobe. This material has excellent thermal properties and its cost is very low. We want the house was always comfortable with a cheap but safe construction.
The results were very rewarding. Currently the house is very warm in winter days and the fact to be built of adobe blocks on the site was cheaper than using a standard technique.
CHALLENGE: Being very strict to keep the division of two equal blocks in the plot, to separate the positive and negative space.
The structural design because the house was built of adobe block walls made in site.
