DESIGN NAME: Wave
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bench
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the undulating waves of the ocean, Wave reminds us of the serenity of a quiet ripple in the sea.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Created from simple framing dimensional lumber, Wave is a unique bench that evokes simplicity in construction and elegance in design with a sculptor's touch. Its seating contours and individual blocks provide ergonomic support and comfort.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Have a seat! Try it. Lounge on it. Enjoy it.
Wave provides ergonomic comfort when a person lounges length-wise on the seating surface. A person's weight is distributed across the surface area of the wood blocks, providing a massaging sensation as the individual shifts his or her weight from one side to the other.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Wave started in concept on October 2013. After several modeling revisions, the design was finalized and the physical prototype is currently being assembled and will be completed December 2013

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This bench was designed using advanced computer modeling and rendering software. The construction of Wave is simple, employing easy to source framing (2"x2") lumber and 3/8" plywood strips fastened together according to the rough shape of the design. The sourced lumber can be spruce, pine, maple or cedar. Then the top surfaces each wood block is sculpted with a grinder to produce the signature wave shape.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 1524mm x Depth 457mm x Height 457mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: John Cruz is a designer coming from the video game industry. Having spent the last 12 years at Electronic Arts, John wanted to merge both the virtual world of computer graphics imagery (CGI) and the real natural world by using his knowledge of CGI principles into the design of furniture. Starting with the cube - a basic element in CGI, John used this shape as the backbone behind his design. Infusing the cube with a ripple pattern, a form that naturally occurs in the environment, a new design was born - Wave.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging experience is translating the computer-modeled design into practical construction using conventional construction techniques. In the end, a little bit of adjustment to the initial design as well as innovative construction techniques helped to make the design a reality.
