DESIGN NAME: SuiTable
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional form
INSPIRATION: I was inspired by jellyfish and seashell, which have organic forms.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The 'SuiTable' features a sustainable organic and dynamic form. I applied traditional basketry patterns and technique (Twining Basketry) as units or modules to systematically construct the form. The application allows construction of a greater flexibility and curvature, in particular an organic form. The characteristics of transparency and lightness of 'SuiTable' reinterprets organic forms or images of nature.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The 'SuiTable' can be extended to interior sculpture or various furniture, for example, table or ottoman. The 'SuiTable' can also be a displayed on the ceiling as a light pendant.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Baltimore, MD, with the first sketching from September 2010, then started exploring various different forms (more than 20), sizes and materials. After all, the project has been developed in Brookly, NY between August 2013 - Oct 2013, in order to realize a prototype into a 1:1.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: To create an organic shape, i researched how to incorporate an analog technique to a digital fabrication in modern times. I immersed myself in a project of structuring spatial design using Basketry. Basketry is a process of weaving a basket or other similar forms wit vegetable fibers. Baskets are used for various purposes, including storage, furnishing, building fences and houses. The forms and shapes of basket are different according to the environment and vegetable fibers growing of the region. I tried to show that Basketry can be applied to Architecture or furniture as a modular unit or as structure itself with artificial and transparent materials.
CHALLENGE: I tried to experiment many different materials to make organic forms, which have the characters of transparency, flexibility and sustainability. The fishing line provides those characters and is appropriate as a materials to make organic forms.
The 'SuiTable' is handmade. Researching a method to shorten the time of production process would greatly improve up-scaling the size of 'SuiTable' and diversifying the form, its function and applicability.
