| DESIGN NAME: W Doha Hotel & Residences PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hotel & Residences INSPIRATION: MZ Architects was appointed by the Al Jaidah Group, one of the most successful privately-held companies operating in Qatar, to design the W brand’s first signature hotel in the Middle East, to be managed by Starwood. W had selected the city of Doha as it is a very cutting edge and contemporary city. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The W is an internationally recognized luxury boutique hotel brand that was launched in 1998 with the W New York, and has since expanded with over fifty hotels and resorts around the world. W has become the fastest growing luxury hotel brand in the world, with each hotel offering a unique mix of innovative design and comfort. The client brief was to create an iconic mid-rise hotel with approximately 71,500 sqm of practical and efficient hotel and residential spaces. The client’ and W brand’s wish was to build a hotel distinctively inspired by the city of Doha yet underlining the brand’s unique values, mixing cutting-edge design with local influences and creating a place to play or work by day, or to mix and mingle in high-energy spaces by night. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: - PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The construction started in 2005 and ended in 2008. The hotel opened to the public in March 2009. As desert dunes soar next to towering skyscrapers, the W Doha Hotel & Residences dazzles by the Arabian Sea. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As the client believed in modern architecture, they expected a level of design and style that didn’t exist yet at that time in Qatar, wishing to set a new standard in Doha for what a luxury boutique hotel experience should be. The design proposed by MZ Architects was simple yet modern and contemporary. An innovative and cutting-edge structure with comfortable and cozy spaces. The dramaticly sculpted volume, never seen before responded to the client’s vision of having a stand-alone structure, efficient in all ways and eye-capturing. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: W Doha Hotel & Residences is located in the heart of Doha, with the high-energy interiors and vivid, lifestyle driven design by interior designers ‘United Designers’ of London. Described as ‘a modern sanctuary above the city’, the hotel is both extroverted in its strong forms, and yet introverted in the sense that the exterior gives little away about what is happening inside. The serviced apartments also offer a new kind of accommodation. In line with W’s positioning as being a hotel ‘for the young and the young at heart’, the primary target audience of the W Doha is the “modern, tech-savvy travellers who appreciate the sophistication that the W offers in terms of facilities and service as well as attitude”. W Doha Hotel & Residences is a leading-edge, contemporary lifestyle experience with a complete service offering bringing a sensory multiplex of entertainment, culinary delights, nightlife and hospitality to Doha, and offering a range of guest room types, from its Spectacular and Fabulous rooms to the W and Wow suites. Located in a pointy part of the building, the suites are inherently dramatic because of their unusual, angular shape. The hotel features 441 rooms blending vivid interiors and stunning views of the Arabian Gulf, and 635 systems including 31 suites and 154 W branded Residences, three signature restaurants, three stylish lounges for guests to mix and mingle, a poolside outdoor shisha lounge, champagne bar, event space, and luxury retail space. Inspiring, iconic, innovative and influential in the judicious Doha setting, the W Hotel melts into the overall landscape of the West Bay, whilst simultaneously bringing a new flavour to the area, revolutionizing the face of modern luxury accommodation in the city.
