DESIGN NAME: Hitotaba
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lamp
INSPIRATION: The Sen furniture series, including the Hitotaba lamp, was inspired by the unique aspects of traditional Japanese craft, patterns, hieroglyphs and nuances. It also has been created with lines that minimize excess to express both form and functionality in a range of applications because I am a designer with background in graphic design and would create furniture just like a simple perspective drawing on paper.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Japanese designer Shinn Asano with background in graphic design releases 6 piece collection of steel furniture called Sen, which turns 2D lines into 3D forms. The Sen has been created with lines that minimize excess to express both form and functionality in a range of applications, inspired by the unique aspects of traditional Japanese craft, patterns, and others. Hitotaba Lamp is inspired by the scene of bunches of rice straw hanging downwards to dry.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is the lamp and also the sculptural piece because the lines appear as abstract 3D form and emphasis placed more on expressivity compared to a conventional lamp. I prefer to enjoy the diffusion of light at night and also to enjoy viewing the piece at day time as a sculpture, especially enjyoy the shadows created when light hit the piece.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2012 in Japan, and was exhibited in Tokyo Designers Week in September to November 2012.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: There are many rice fields in the place where I grew up, and I was playing the surroundings of the rice field well. A rice field, especially the spectacle in which the rice is hung in autumn make Japan consider for me. Probably, rice reaping is loaded with exceptional thoughts, such as a sense of accomplishment, although there are various events by rice reaping for rice farmers. I wanted to make such the spectacle into the form of a lamp, and designed the Hitotaba lamp.
CHALLENGE: The major role of graphic design is to communicate something to people, and product design is to be used by people. Also, graphic is dealt in a limited plane, in an imaginary or unreal world. On the other hand, product is a solid object in a real world. While such differences cross over with one another, respective results are achieved; I feel the challenge and the fun in such design process. I have given Hitotaba lamp a functional role of product, as well as a role of planar composition and communication of graphic.
