DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
uChair

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Office Chair

INSPIRATION:
Our inspiration draws from our desire to improve the integrated experience of a computer user in the work and play space. This extends into furniture and various supporting computer accessories.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
uChair is designed to be practical, affordable "under US 200 dollars", comfortable and innovative. It's the most "personalisable" chair in the world. It allows the user to easily customise the back banner and armrest toy/tool to reflect the user's personality.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The headrest and lumbar support of uChair are constructed from soft, cushion material for a more comfortable postural position, beneficial when sitting for long periods of time. The armrest design is rotatable to ensure flexibility in usage, with an option of a tray for your keyboard and mouse. uChair is designed to be an extension of the user personality and includes the option of a funky customisable Velcro chair banner with storage area and an armrest knob for a tablet holder or stress toy.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2012 and was ready for production in January 2013.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The uChair is developed using stainless steel frame and covered with synthetic leather material. The alloy rotatable arm rest is developed using linear and ball bearing technology that is proven to be more durable over extended usage. The inside filler is cotton and polymer sponge and has high elastic modulus to neutralize pressures and prevent shape deformations. Other parts and materials include wood for base of the chair, a high loading capacity gas lift and unomax x5 series wheel.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Product dimensions. overall width 550mm, depth 500mm, height 1050mm-1200mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Objectives. 1. Identifying product opportunities where we could make an improvement. 2. A fresh perspective towards our product category, taking into consideration current and future trends. How can we design something that will help solve problems by enhancing comfort? 3. Once the suitable product opportunity and concept had been identified and constructed, we researched similar products on the market, considering design, aesthetics and functionality, whilst ensuring practicality. 4. To validate and refine our product concept, we have used focus groups, online surveys, votes and social media. eg, We have initiated a voting process on our website. Methodology. Marketing research and lean startup methodology to validate product concept. Data collection. a. Our team have conducted questionnaires with our focus groups consisting of a demographic age group of males and females between the ages of 18-25. b. Communication. emails, conversations with friends, family and associates for critique, feedback and suggestions. c. Social media platforms. Facebook, YouTube, we encourage, validate and measure interest in our product by regularly monitoring response and interaction eg. likes, shares, comments, re-posts. d. Call-to-action techniques. We encourage our customers to engage by way of online voting for our products.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to be able to come up with unique products that are innovative and within our scope of vision. Since we are developing a product for commercial success, we had to make sure the uChair design, material selection and cost of production fit within our target cost range at under US 200 dollars whilst ensuring uChair remains a good quality product.
