Uchair Office Chair by Johnathan Wu

Home > Winners > Design #27708 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Johnathan Wu (JW) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Johnathan Wu by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design uChair here.

Interview with Johnathan Wu at Saturday 20th of April 2013

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JW: The product concept arises from the desire to improve the integrated experience of a computer user. Over the past decade, many advances have been made towards the design, features and performance of a computer hardware, but very little attention has been shown towards interrelated objects such as chairs, desks and supporting accessories.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JW: uChair is an extension of one's self. It's an expression of the personality. We want to give the user the flexibility to do that while having incorporating useful features into the chair.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JW: We're constantly refining the design to make it more comfortable and useful. We plan to make the prototype in June 2013.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JW: It took well more than 1 year.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JW: This innovation came to life when a small team of engineers, designers and gamers meet and worked together at a cyber café to create innovative products affordable by the masses. We were asking ourselves how we could improve the integrated experience of a computer user? How could our products assist their digital lives?

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JW: We are addressing both the generation Y designer lifestyle market and as well as the hardware gaming market which is predicted to reach 35.4 billion in 2016.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JW: It's never been done before. This innovation was possible because we apply multi-faceted perspectives and applied that to objects that would have been designed in a traditional way – such as the office chair.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JW: uChair is very personal to the user. It's an extension of one's self.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JW: Solidworks.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JW: Personalisable banners, armrest toys and supporting accessories - such as keyboard / mouse tray.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JW: Product Manager, Industrial Designer and Material Engineer.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JW: It's about understanding today's technology environment and how could this design support that environment?

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JW: The primary designer (Johnathan) does not have a design background, this is one of his first work. So he wanted to test the reaction of the public to his designs.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JW: We're always improving and pushing boundaries by overcoming challenges.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
