DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Park Inn Hotel - Riyadh

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Hotel

INSPIRATION:
The idea behind the Riyadh Park Inn Hotel originated from the concept of blocks, where from one item a module is created which comes back together to form a series of variations and alternatives, minimizing waste and creating a well knit and unified whole. The same method is applied in construction wood stacking, where one can keep on generating new variations.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The designed building is altogether dynamic and static: the dynamism is generated through the movement of the blocks while the rectangular and sober shape gives the building a static foundation. The proposed hotel lies as a large dynamic element radiating light from the elongated slim slits of its façade and breaking up to expose its central spine, the atrium, defining the entrance and the common spaces of the hotel. Inspired by the design of the Muqarnas (reminiscent of stalactites) in traditional Arabic architecture, the internal vertically zigzagging atrium plays the role of a courtyard and allows for continuous ventilation along the building while creating a human hub for interaction and public activities. The design investigates the relationship between mass and void, creating a sense of privacy where little exposure of the hotel’s internal private activities are reflected to the outside. They seem to be protected by the large mass of stone that buffers inside and outside. Designed according to functional and sustainable requirements, the building offers narrow and deep perforate openings provide natural light while reducing heat absorption and thus energy consumption. The building’s reading is one very much related to the local architectural language of mass and stone. It blocks the views from the outside and protects from the harsh climate thus generating a safe temperate internal space. A differentiation between the reading of the building’s base and body reflects the buildings internal functions and the intricate treatments of the facades show a sensitivity to exposure, light and the play on the different modules.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
In general, every technical aspect of the project is considered as an opportunity to enhance the performance of the technical systems. Sustainable site planning is highly considered, from light pollution reduction, water efficient landscaping and outdoor air delivery monitoring. Lift systems are designed with the lowest energy consumption and shall be equipped with a regeneration unit returning back to the grid and used elsewhere on site. All major systems shall have a high level of control either by operators or by occupants to promote the productivity, efficiency, comfort and wellbeing of building occupants. The project design has accounted for construction practices that notably reduce or eliminate the negative impact of the building on the environment and occupants. Systems and fittings to optimize the overall energy performance of the building , like water use reduction, minimum indoor air quality performance, controllability of lighting and thermal comfort systems and maximizing daylight and visual comfort. More sophisticated techniques shall be considered like fundamental refrigerant management, enhanced commissioning and fundamental commissioning of building energy systems.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Total surface area: 23,000 sqm. The project is a hotel that houses 200 rooms, 10 suites, dining areas, business center, health club and a large underground parking. Catering primarily for businessmen on short trips to the kingdom, it becomes a safe haven for their stay, away from the noise and traffic of the city. The project is located within the vibrant commercial yet calm Al Ahsa street. 500m from Makkah al Mukarrama road, linking the project to practically anywhere in Riyadh. The street is lively during day with numerous commercial, retail and offices low to mid rise buildings in the surrounding area while calm at night and away from the city nightly heavy traffic. In brief, the project location combines proximity and practicality during days and calmness during nights, ideal for a business hotel.
