DESIGN NAME: Temple
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cake stand
INSPIRATION: I failed to find a modern looking cake stand for todays needs and lifestyles.
I wanted a contemporary looking stand which could be easily stored in a cupboard or drawer, was easy to clean and dishwasher safe.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Temple is easy to assemble by sliding the plates over the central tapered spine.
Disassembly is just as easy by simply sliding them back off. All 4 main elements are held together by the Stacker. The mini spine helps keep all the elements together for multi angled compact storage. You can use different plate configurations for different occasions.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: -
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started around November 2011 and carried on until March 2012. As it was my own project it had to be worked round fee paying work.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design is shown with pressure molded ceramic plates in gloss white. The central spine is solid beech wood with an oiled finish. The 'mini spine' is self coloured injection moulded ABS with a fine texture. The design could use melamine for the plates and an ABS plastic spine has been developed.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Bottom plate 304mm x 255mm
Mid plate 230mm X 192mm
Top plate 158mm x 132mm
Central Spine 282 x 53.5 x 13.5
Mini spine 90.5 x 53.5
TAGS: Clean & simple, compact for storage, intuitive.
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Desk research and store visits. Home visits and interviews with domestic bakers and hobbyists for insight. Creative workshop with first thought ideas and solutions.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was the design drivers we created for the project:- clean & simple, contemporary in look & feel, a celebration of materials, easily cleaned & hygienic, compact when not in use, adaptable for a variety of occasions.
