| DESIGN NAME: Sensei PRIMARY FUNCTION: Transformable Chairs and Coffee Table INSPIRATION: Drawing geometric forms and puzzles. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The way the chairs are combined to make a cofee table is quite original. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: You just lay the chairs down horizontaly and insert the two backs together to form a cofee table. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2008 and finished in february 2012 FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Square section chromed pipes and laquered mdf. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 440 mm, Depth 510 mm, Height 760 mm TAGS: surprise, black and white, opposites, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Although this project is called sensei, and one could easily finds it´s connection to the ying and yang symbol, it´s form was not in any way inspired in these symbols. Like most of my projects, it starts by just drawing random geometric shapes, later decomposing them until an idea comes up. In this case, it was merely a concidence that the formal resolution of the problem solved with this furniture is so much alike the ying and yang symbol. Originaly, the shape of the backs of the chairs were with rounded edges (pipe bending). However, i wanted to make such an abstract project in which all forms were reduced to planes and lines. I think the result was favorable. Something as abstract ans simple as black and white.
