DESIGN NAME: Gibbous
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair and Ottoman
INSPIRATION: The Moon
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Gibbous is a modular outdoor or indoor piece. It thrives outdoors because it is upholstered in a heavy duty, waterproof, glow-in-the-dark material. This material will charge naturally by the sunlight during the day, and glow throughout the night. The chair is a sphere, one quarter slice slides out to reveal the chair and this slice becomes the ottoman. This ottoman may also be used as a seat, or as a headrest for one lying in the grass. When the chair is closed up, you have a beautiful glowing ball; an environmentally friendly mild lighting to your garden, pool, or living room.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Gibbous is upholstered with a glow-in-the-dark material, so it must be charged using a lighting source. The best and most efficient (and green) is sunlight, making this a perfect outdoor piece. The piece transforms from a sphere by removing the quarter slice, which reveals the chair and this slice itself becomes the ottoman. The slice can also be used as a seat or as a head/backrest for someone lying on the ground. When use of the chair is done, it is then compacted back into a sphere to glow beautifully throughout the night.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was designed in New York in July 2011. It was manufactured in Kuwait and finished in December 2011. It was exhibited at the Contemporary Art Platform in Kuwait January 2012. It will be exhibited at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City May 2012.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The first step of the research process was locating a material which was glow-in-the-dark and suited the parameters of the project. Collection of materials led to experimentations comparing their type of glow, length of glow, ease of charging, durability, and longevity. With a material selected, I began the process of the detailed design of the chair, dimensions and comfort of user. The chair and the ottoman had to be comfortable and in proper scale, while still fitting into the sphere and complying with the integrity of the concept of the design.
CHALLENGE: This design allowed for many problems to arise. The most difficult of them was allowing for the reality of this idea of creating a glowing ball, while being able to transform it into a comfortable chair. These pieces are handmade and require the utmost perfection in it's creation. The ottoman which completes the sphere, is a hand cut cushion. The upholstery of the piece was a challenge as well, creating a pattern than could flawlessly upholster a sphere.
