| DESIGN NAME: Ribbons, Strips and Diamonds PRIMARY FUNCTION: Three-part window dressing set. INSPIRATION: I was as much motivated by my own natural instinctive desire to create as by the desire to satisfy an individual client’s needs, hereby developing a window treatment item for aesthetic and practical purposes. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: While offering the practical advantages of fully lined curtains (insulation, solar protection, echo dampening, warmth, masking of an ugly view) and a blind (filtering of light) this set is also particularly original, aesthetic and stylish and the combination of different coloured fabrics (pea/light/metallic dark green, navy blue, white, yellow), textures (satin ribbons, linen, net), shapes (small/big diamonds) and surfaces (piping versus flat fabric panels) contributes to the striking effect. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: If the fixed central element attached to the window frame acts as a focal point, gently filtering light , it also acts as a contrast to the surrounding lined curtains which may partially or totally block out light (being hoisted up with tie backs, let loose or drawn over the central degrading element). The central element itself, may integrate a traditional blind mechanism with hooks and cords to be pulled up to allow for more penetration of light if desired. Ideal on a bow/bay window or over sliding glass patio doors. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2010 in Metz, France and finished in July 2010 in Metz, France. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A pair of silver eyelet headed curtains with light green lining, comprise light/pea green and navy blue strips machine sewn together, embellished with handsewn on navy blue, pea/light green linen diamonds, blue bias tape, metallic dark green satin ribbon and small plastic green beads. A central, mainly machine sewn item shows an initial battened head and taut piped material panel, follow-up descending net diamond ribboned panels and a piped strip/final piped diamond, all being attached to each other. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Each lined curtain measures W = 2620mm x H = 2600mm with panels illustrating three strips of material (W = 1120mm all strips together) in light green, pea green and navy blue and one rectangular light green element (W = 1500mm). Concerning the central element, overall length is 1500mm, with a first panel’s width measuring 860mm. Follow-up degrading panels have varying lengths and widths. The piping elements have a diameter of 30mm. TAGS: Aesthetic, practical, diamonds, original, fancy, stylish, striking, unique style, green, navy blue, ribbons, effective, elegant, artistic, filters light RESEARCH ABSTRACT: While considering practicality, research focused on aesthetics, the client wishing to take possession of a unique, striking set that corresponded to her perception of art and and the meaning of “artistic” (presence of paintings, sculptures on the premises). Research also focused on light variation (too much or less at certain times of the day) thus, curtains needed to be drawn to, aside, or let loose with light equally filtering through and around the descending net and fabric panels. CHALLENGE: The challenge : creation of a practical, original, stylistic and artistic design. Curtain/central item difficulties - corresponding placement of base diamonds/fabric strips to initial eyelet spacing were overcome by constantly measuring and bringing base diamonds closer to curtain heading. Material loss, maintenance of net rigidity, panel irregularity were overcome by adding 5 to 10mm when sewing seams ; stretching, pinning and tacking well ; often measuring and ensuring tightly fitting pipes.
