DESIGN NAME: National Museum at Vestbanen,Oslo,Norway
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Museum
INSPIRATION: Our inspiration was the view of icebergs from a distance.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To design a “work of art” to exhibit works of art was our ambition and vision for the Norwegian Museum of Modern Art and Architecture. Our aim was to create a point of reference, for the area of the port while approaching the site from a distance. Thus, we designed a building that would stand due to its unique shape without making reference to any other building. We wished to provide a form of originality, the sense of a start (sketch of the museum from a distance). Our approach is aiming at something unique. This is a rather artful than strictly architectural approach. Our inspiration was the view of icebergs from a distance. This is a picture that people in the Arctic Circle are familiar with, as well as a stereotypic picture of beauty in the Norwegian landscape for people all over the world.
During our research for the building, while visiting the area and studying the course of the Norwegian civilisation over the centuries, we concluded that the dominant element has always been the relationship with the sea. Norwegians are people that were always in close relation with the sea. Oslo is located by the sea, and so will be this building. Every reference, picture, photo, even recipes related to Norway have some sea inside. There is the impression that this civilisation and this people jumped out of the sea. This is an important element and we took it into account as a key element for our solution. We wanted our museum, the “iceberg”, our initial shape to be founded in water. To underline the relationship of this place (city, country) with the sea we invented an entrance to the museum that would make visitor dive into the water first and then come out of the water as they enter the areas of “collections”. This would be an initial baptism of the visitor in the constituent, the essence of the Norse Civilisation: water.
