DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Spiral Bloom

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Public Art

INSPIRATION:
The artwork Spiral Bloom is inspired by the dynamic energy of life and the infinite possibilities of the future. The design draws from natural forms in motion, such as the spiraling patterns found in biological growth, celestial bodies, and fluid dynamics. It embodies the concept of continuous transformation and collective strength, symbolizing unity, evolution, and innovation.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Spiral Bloom is a large-scale public art installation specifically designed for a modern, high-ceiling atrium with expansive floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The artwork consists of three sculptural elements, measuring 640 cm, 750 cm, and 1070 cm, suspended within a 36-meter-wide and 7.8-meter-high space. Each sculpture is composed of 51 stainless steel components, arranged in a concentric spiral formation that radiates outward. This arrangement creates a floating visual effect, reinforcing the sense of lightness and movement. The work integrates seamlessly with its minimalist architectural surroundings, responding to the openness and transparency of the space. As natural light shifts throughout the day, the sculptures cast dynamic reflections and shadows, enhancing their ethereal presence. The installation invites viewers to engage from multiple perspectives, offering ever-changing visual interpretations that evoke vitality, aspiration, and an unfolding future.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Spiral Bloom is designed to be experienced from multiple vantage points, creating a dynamic interaction between the artwork, space, and viewers. From the ground level, the sculptures appear as organic, fluid forms in midair, while from the second-floor windows, they take on new perspectives, emphasizing their three-dimensional depth. The interplay of natural light with the highly reflective surfaces produces shifting visual effects throughout the day. As sunlight passes through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the sculptures cast intricate reflections and shadows, transforming the surrounding space into a constantly evolving visual composition.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February 2024 and finished with installation in Taipei,Taiwan in September 2024

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Fine Arts and Art Installation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The realization of Spiral Bloom required a meticulous combination of engineering precision and artistic craftsmanship. The three suspended structures, each weighing between 300 and 900 kg, were fabricated using high-grade stainless steel, ensuring durability and structural integrity. The individual components were laser-cut, welded, and polished to achieve a seamless, fluid aesthetic. One of the key technical challenges was the suspension system. The steel cables had to be strategically selected and positioned to maintain both structural safety and visual elegance. Extensive structural calculations were performed to determine optimal load distribution, and full-scale installation simulations were conducted in the workshop to refine the suspension points. This rigorous process ensured the artwork’s stability while preserving the intended sense of weightlessness.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Dimensions: Three sculptural elements (640 cm, 750 cm, 1070 cm) Total Installation Area: 36 meters wide, 7.8 meters high Material: Stainless steel (51 components per sculpture) Weight: Individual sculptures range from 300 to 900 kg Suspension System: Precision-calibrated steel cables

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research behind Spiral Bloom explores the relationship between large-scale suspended sculptures and architectural space, focusing on structural engineering, visual perception, and material properties. The project investigates how sculptural elements can convey movement and lightness despite their substantial weight, challenging conventional notions of mass and gravity in public art. The study also examines the psychological impact of suspended artworks in contemporary architectural environments, analyzing how spatial transparency, natural lighting, and reflective materials influence viewer perception and engagement. Through this research, Spiral Bloom demonstrates an innovative approach to integrating art with architectural space, enhancing the aesthetic and experiential qualities of public environments.

CHALLENGE:
The primary challenge in creating Spiral Bloom was achieving a delicate balance between structural stability and the illusion of weightlessness. Given the considerable weight of the sculptures, the suspension system required highly precise engineering to ensure both safety and aesthetic coherence. The thickness and positioning of the steel cables had to be meticulously calibrated to avoid disrupting the visual harmony of the installation. Another significant challenge was the seamless integration of the artwork with its minimalist architectural setting. The transparency of the space, combined with the reflective surfaces of the sculptures, required careful consideration of light dynamics and spatial interaction. Extensive prototyping, structural testing, and full-scale simulations were conducted to refine the final composition, ensuring that Spiral Bloom would resonate harmoniously with its environment.
