DESIGN NAME: Moon Trace
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Art Installation
INSPIRATION: This project's inspiration stems from exploring China and France's rich cultural heritages, especially appreciating lunar phases and the dragon symbol. The moon's waxing and waning carry deep metaphorical meanings, while the dragon represents strength and wisdom in both cultures. The design team fused Eastern full moon and Western crescent moon connotations, incorporating the dragon, symbolizing China and France's enduring friendship and shared vision for a bright future.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This installation merges Eastern and Western lunar phase cultures with dragon culture. It mimics the moon's form, harmoniously integrating dragon motifs. Advanced lighting and smoke techniques explore cultural differences between the Eastern full moon's reunion imagery and the Western crescent moon's hope. The project subtly integrates the historically rich dragon element, offering a visual feast that transcends boundaries and deeply fuses Sino-French cultural essences.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This installation adapts to various exhibition scenarios with multiple lighting effects and an automatic sensing spray system that creates diverse landscapes based on audience position and viewing angles. The team innovatively incorporated projection technology to enhance visual presentation, meeting the display needs of different themes.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The installation was launched in Shanghai, China, in October 2024, serving as one of the highlights of the inaugural Shanghai International Light and Shadow Festival, and has been permanently collected for exhibition. Additionally, the project team is actively preparing for a re-exhibition event to be held in France.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The eco-friendly installation mainly uses recycled steel. Its modular design divides into four interconnected parts for efficient assembly/disassembly. The lighting system includes built-in LED strips and external projected light, interacting with polished surfaces and intermittent smoke effects, creating a realistic yet surreal tunnel. Viewers experience the fusion of East-West cultures and the integration of eco-friendly concepts with modern technology amidst light and shadow interplay.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project showcases a cross-cultural lighting art installation, exploring lunar phase and dragon cultures of East and West, marking the 60th anniversary of China-France diplomatic relations. Research focuses on conveying cultural depths and fusing light, shadow, water mist, and more. Viewers immerse in the installation's cultural connotations and emotional resonance, experiencing a blend of East and West.
CHALLENGE: During this project's design, we faced multifaceted challenges. Extensive research required significant time consulting materials. Budget and time constraints led to intense communication and coordination. Sudden temperature drops and rain at the site caused issues, but the team worked overtime together to complete the project ahead of schedule. Fabricating irregular structures was difficult, but the team prioritized environmental protection, using recyclable materials. Through iterative tests,we achieved the desired artistic effect.
