DESIGN NAME: U A I
PRIMARY FUNCTION: XR Workshop
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the need to remove barriers for individuals eager to engage in manufacturing but limited by access, cost, distance, or disabilities, this project enables remote participation in creative processes through xr technology. It focuses on preserving traditional skills, revitalizing communities, driving innovation, and promoting new business opportunities. This approach fosters inclusivity, expands access to creative manufacturing, and ensures the sustainability of traditional industries.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This unique digital shared workshop combining a secret-base aesthetic with cutting-edge technology, offers a revolutionary ui/ux system. A 50-year-old warehouse was transformed into a sleek, ai-managed space where devices like 3d printers are seamlessly controlled via a smartphone app. With xr-powered remote manufacturing, users can create from anywhere, eliminating barriers related to disabilities, distance, or technical expertise. This ensures an inclusive and accessible experience for all.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This facility, located in izumi, osaka, japan, operates as a 24/7 digital shared workshop. Users access the space via a custom app on their smartphones, which allows equipment reservations. The app also features the "takumi" system, enabling remote support and connection with skilled technicians. Within the facility, users can create objects using advanced digital equipment, collaborate or receive assistance remotely through xr technology, and upload 3d-scanned creations for online sale.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project began in December 2022 in izumi, osaka, japan, when Oji Osamu, the founder, initiated the transformation of a 50-year-old warehouse through diy efforts. As an it engineer, a ceo of a system development company, and a leading pioneer in xr technology using smart glasses, he applied his expertise to establish a new hub for it and manufacturing. The facility was soft-launched in december 2023 and officially opened as an advanced digital shared workshop in march 2024.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We developed an xr system using smart glasses like the apple vision pro, enabling remote collaboration through visual and audio data sharing. Fully designed and developed in-house, it integrates web and cloud technologies with smart glasses applications. The workshop features a black-themed design, with walls, floors and machines built by our engineering team using diy methods. This fusion of advanced it technology and hands-on craftsmanship creates a unique blend of innovation and practicality.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The digital equipment stage area measures 5m in width, 8m in depth, and 60cm in height, with a ceiling height of 7m, creating an open space. Within this area, there are 3d printers, 3d scanners, laser cutters, an automated photography system, and remote support robots. Additionally, there is a pc area with 10 high-spec pcs, measuring 7m in width and 14m in depth. Above the pc area is a break area for meals and events, also measuring 7m by 14m.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Through social media research, we identified the needs of individuals interested in manufacturing but unable to participate. This led to four key innovations:
1) Transforming an old warehouse into a digital workshop, repurposing unused assets;
2) Enabling participation for individuals with disabilities, expanding accessibility;
3) Utilizing xr and 3d scanning technology to preserve traditional crafts;
4) Creating a hub for digital creators to develop 3d prototypes and collaborate with manufacturers.
CHALLENGE: The key challenge was designing a user interface and system that would enable real-time manufacturing experiences for individuals with disabilities or those unable to visit in person. We focused on leveraging our expertise in xr technology, integrating smart glasses with a web-based system. Through extensive trials, we refined the process by collaborating with remote users, including individuals with disabilities and international participants, to ensure the system met their needs effectively.
