| DESIGN NAME: Ruman Origin Farmstead PRIMARY FUNCTION: Architecture INSPIRATION: With an increasing number of individuals migrating from rural areas to urban centers, urban residents are becoming weary of the hectic city life and are longing to retreat to the serene countryside. Hence, this dwelling was established in a field located on the fringes of the city. Blending the rustic plain charm of the countryside with the modern amenities of urban living, it caters to various purposes such as accommodation, exhibiting, social gatherings, and living quarters. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The farmstead, comprising three courtyards, blends the distinctive forested settlement of Western Sichuan. Located within a rice paddy field on the fringes of Chengdu, it has each courtyard representing the essence and architectural principles of the times, transitioning from tradition to modernity and envisioning the future. It explores and exhibits an exemplary rural lifestyle tailored for contemporary individuals. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: 1 Courtyard, located at the entrance, is a purely wooden structure that embodies the traditional aesthetics and historical value of ancient Western Sichuan buildings, serving as a reception space. 2 Courtyard is a modern restaurant and multi-functional space, symbolizing the openness and functionality of modern design. 3 Courtyard is an independent dwelling unit that combines tradition and modernity, standing for the exploration and practice of a sustainable lifestyle in the future. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design and planning work began on February 2020 and concluded on June 2022 in Chengdu. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 3 Courtyard stands out from 1 and 2 Courtyards as a future minded, energy efficient, contemporary, eco friendly homestead. It is built using conventional materials and methods, and its roof comes with solar PV panels, along with ground source heat pumps, to fulfill the energy requirements for living. Additionally, it infuses features like raised floors, rammed earth facades, inner courtyards with patios, and double layer hollow door and window systems to drastically decrease energy usage. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Total construction area: 1200 square meters, Total area: 4000 square metres TAGS: Sustainable, Ecological, Future Minded, Rural, Cultural, Multifunctional, Residential, Architecture RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design team engaged in an extensive research with local residents of various age groups and professional backgrounds to gather diverse needs and feedback. By analyzing local living patterns, habits, social interactions, and cultural practices, the team aims to develop an architectural design that is unique to the region and blends well with the surroundings, setting an innovative example of rural architectural design. CHALLENGE: Integrating modern functions into the design, without compromising traditional features, is a challenging task. While maintaining the traditional architectural characteristics, modern architectural techniques and facilities are incorporated into the traditional structure through technological advancements and creative design. The attempt to retain historical features, architectural skills, and to pass on local history and culture pose immense challenges.
