OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Located in a prime spot overlooking the panoramic beauty of the Chao Phraya River, this house features a grand living and dining area situated on the second floor, the main level of the home. This space is strategically placed adjacent to the swimming pool to maximize the view and functionality. Designed to host up to 50 guests, the area caters to diverse groups, including the parents’ guests, the children’s guests, and the grandchildren’s guests. To achieve this column-free openness, the structural design incorporates a long cantilever supported by a concealed concrete truss within the walls between the third-floor bedrooms. This is combined with a lightweight structural system to cover the area. The innovative structure spans nearly 12 meters, ensuring uninterrupted views of the river bend while maintaining the integrity and elegance of the design.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The design process for the River House began in 2019, and after four years of meticulous planning and construction, it was completed in 2023. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
To create a grand living room on the second floor with panoramic views of the river, the design minimizes the number of columns. The columns are strategically placed at the rear of the living room, allowing the space near the river to remain unobstructed. A long cantilevered structure, supported by a concealed concrete truss integrated into the walls between the third-floor bedrooms, provides the necessary support. This innovative combination of structural elements spans nearly 12 meters, ensuring a seamless, open space. The lightweight structure enhances the design, eliminating the need for columns near the riverfront. This allows users to fully enjoy the uninterrupted view of the river bend, free from structural intrusions.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
This three-story house measures 70 meters by 56.3 meters, with a height of 13.5 meters. Spanning an impressive 4,500 square meters, the residence is situated on a sprawling 24,316-square-meter plot near the Chao Phraya River in Thailand.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Unlike typical private homes, this house is designed to accommodate a variety of users and activities, including family members and guests of up to 50 people. To address these unique requirements, the designer conducted extensive research into user activities and carefully planned the house’s functions. Additionally, the building’s orientation was optimized for Southeast Asia’s tropical climate. To minimize heat gain, the narrow sides of the house face the east and west, reducing direct exposure to the intense morning and afternoon sun. This thoughtful alignment not only enhances energy efficiency but also ensures a more comfortable living environment throughout the day.

CHALLENGE:
This house is thoughtfully designed to accommodate different types of users by separating functions across its three floors Ground Floor: This level serves as a hub for service and recreational facilities, with a layout inspired by a boutique hotel. It features a spacious parking area, a drop-off zone, storage rooms, a kitchen, and indoor parking for supercars. The recreational spaces include a fitness room, a table tennis area, a golf simulator, and a badminton court, which are seamlessly connected to an outdoor soccer field. Second Floor: The main floor is dedicated to social gatherings and leisure. It features a large living room designed to host parties and accommodate various groups of guests. This space opens onto an outdoor terrace and an infinity swimming pool, offering breathtaking views and a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor areas. Third Floor: Reserved for private use, this level houses the bedrooms. Each room is strategically positioned to maximize views of the river, ensuring privacy and comfort for the residents. Access is provided via a private lift and staircase. In addition to functional design, the house is carefully oriented along an east-west axis to suit the tropical climate. This orientation minimizes heat gain, particularly from the west. The west-facing side is designed with opaque walls to block sunlight, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing cooling costs.
