DESIGN NAME: Tri
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Construction Toy
INSPIRATION: Inspiration comes from a glance to the past. Reviving tradition with innovative design and technology, returning to sustainable wooden toys, with assembling pieces and a distinct geometric logic.
Also inspired in wood, promoting the use of eco-friendly materials, made to last.
An educational game of concentration and creativity that encourages people of all ages to build unconventional shapes, in a new open-ended way of playing, stimulating artistic development and most importantly, having fun.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Tri is a wooden construction game, which differs from typical block games, as it responds to different geometries, achieving countless abstract structures.
Tri is not just a game, it is also a design object, which encourages its users to feel like artists by creating their own decorative figures.
Tri was made with sustainability in mind. From its pieces to its packaging, designed by curving and engraving the wood with the necessary information, as well as a QR code so printing the instructions is not necessary.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Tri challenges players to have fun, think and create with an easy connection of wooden pieces. Decision making regarding position and color, and reinforce understanding of three-dimensional space, geometry, and balance.
With Tri the users can achieve endless configurations, just like imagination. While the pieces have specific connection points [three per piece], they can be joined in any position, allowing players to disregard the one and only rule of the game and give place to free play.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The idea of Tri began several years ago, but it became reality in February 2022, when the first Tri prototype was made, a sustainable product, including its packaging. Commercialization in Chile began in May 2022.
In September 2022 it was one of the 4 brands selected to represent Chile at the Autumnfair, Birmingham, UK. Where it also participated in the Power of One sustainable products exhibition.
In October 2022, it began to be sold in Barcelona, from where it is marketed to the rest of Europe.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Qualitative - Experimental
Is Tri an entertaining game? Develops concentration and other skills? Is it possible to get people away from plastic and screens, returning to the tradition of wooden games with innovative design and technology?
Participatory - Experimental Design
Observation - Tests.
Focus group - Materials test
Target audience -
Tri has no rules. Through free play, the dynamic construction lets the player decide how the construction will be executed. Developing a creative identity expression through playing.
Tri, a sustainable game that promotes moving away from screens and plastic.
CHALLENGE: Creative challenges involve multiple aspects. The creation of an environmentally friendly product. The materiality needs to respond to this premise, in addition to react correctly to the mechanical demands of the game, depending on the players, their skills and strength. As well, discovering the perfect relationship between the thickness of the available wood, and the size of the pieces. Extensive research was executed in the packaging design, followed by numerous Kerfing method tests, cutting various patterns, to achieve the necessary wood's bending point, avoiding its breakage.
