DESIGN NAME: Lovi Center
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mixed Use Shopping Mall
INSPIRATION: Premised on nature, Lovi Center takes inspiration from four seasons, various flower types and mountainous characteristics, which influence the public spaces in the podium, the interior space, the facades and canopies. An ‘Urban Oasis’ is created by integrating fluid rhythm and 100% natural planting into the urban fabric. The biophilic design, dynamic form and expressive use of colours contrast Xi’an’s monochromatic urban image, creating a benchmark of experiential retail/lifestyle destination.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Lovi Center is a biophilic mixed-use development designed to be an expressive commercial hub in Xi’an. As an extension to the greenbelt, the 229,000 sqm development fuses nature, arts and architecture. Flanked by 2 towers in the form of flower buds, the mall is populated with plants and water feature in the atria, arcade and roof, culminating in the form of a 6-storey LED-clad glass funnel that transforms the atria into an immersive environment at night- a landmark for the local community.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Lovi Center has multiple access points where different users can conveniently access the development either for work, shopping or leisure. The public transportations and major boulevards are available in the vicinity of the mall. The green belt park in front of the mall acts as a buffer zone between the highway and the development. The fully accessible planning that stitches the transportation nodes to all key functions allow an integrated and friendly environment throughout the development.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2015 and finished in June 2023 in Xi’an, PRC.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The project achieved Level 2 Green Building Standard of China. Green roofs improve the performance of roof insulation in response to Xi’an cold climate, and effectively reduce the heat gain. Roof shading devices are carefully integrated with the building design from the ETFE canopy, providing effective shading to the roof garden and minimising solar heat gain, which leads to cooling energy reduction. The glass funnel maximises sunlight and reduces usage of energy with enhanced thermal mass.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Xi’an city held its legendary position in history being the starting point of the famous trade route, Desert Silk Road. Mu Us Desert in Shaanxi province, is one of the many deserts that the silk road passes. The design concept is to create a Urban Oasis that brings an environment to Xi’an that’s in strong contrast to a place known as the Parch City. Greenery, both inside and out, colour, light shows and sculptural forms contrasts the city’s dour monochrome appearance.
CHALLENGE: To ensure quality and minimise cost, the tower façade panels are epitomized via the seamless integration between design and accurate scientific optimization. Complex panel shapes are rationalised to a standard and efficient detail. BIM calculation is used to analyse and improve panel feasibility. The number of reflective single curve glass is controlled within the smaller area of tower surface, while the number of flat glass panels is maximised whilst retaining an elegant form.
