DESIGN NAME: Hangzhou One Future
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mixed Use
INSPIRATION: This project is inspired by the lotus root, which is hollow inside yet upright outside, hence the symbolism of the lotus as a gentleman; it is porous and accessible, hence the symbolism of prosperity. The design of the facade pursues simplicity and subtlety, while maintaining a square and efficient plan, it is slightly divided at the refuge level to create a unique form without affecting the functionality of the floors used.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project site is located in the core area of Qianjiang Century City. The goal of the project is to create a humane, modern, innovative and efficient research environment that combines light harvesting, ventilation, energy saving and landscape, creating buildings that are both flexible and sustainable in use. With modern techniques to create a link between the past and the future of the building, enduring, become a classic landmark of the city.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The architectural cores are optimised on a limited plot by minimising the elevator zones, as to create more functional spaces and to maximise the view from the twin towers. Individual elevators are designed to separate the office and residential areas, strengthening the boundary of public and private spaces. The design has adopted an interactive circulation to enhance the live-work harmony.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2018 and finished in August 2023. The project site is located in the core area of Qianjiang Century City, with Haiqing Road to the southwest, Ning Yi Road to the northwest, Pinglan Road to the southeast, Minxiang Road to the northeast and Plot A-07(2) to the southeast.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Materials used in building is important in sustainable design as the extensive network of raw materials extraction, processing and transportation required. Process to produce construction materials may also pollute the air and water, destroy natural habitats and deplete natural resources. The strategies include: 1. Product Life Cycle (PLC); 2. Recycled content; 3. Regional materials; 4. Certified wood; 5. Use of modular design to maximize use of precast elements to minimize the on-site construction works; 6. HEPA filter; 7. Low/No VOC materials.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Various sustainable design strategies and techniques are applied to the project, including “Sponge City Strategy”, river water source energy center, vacuum garbage collection system, rainwater and reclaimed water recovery systems, intelligent building management system etc.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: One of the design challenges was how to arrange a twin tower complex integrating office and residential areas within a narrow site. It is a humane design that creates an exterior-interior connection and maximises the spatial experience, forming a live-work environment that equipped with efficient layout planning. Inspired by the lotus of West Lake, the jagged architectural form staggered on refuge floors to create a lotus root-like façade which is complemented with vertically-connected cores to offer porosity. The massing of the twin towers is symmetrical, offering a unique and lively form in a high-density area. The lotus inspiration is further extended to the curved entrance canopy, softening the linear architectural form that fronts the major roads. The façade concept is derived from the ripples of the lotus lake as a merging of nature and architecture. The bronze façade, uses aluminum and glass panels, glitters distinctively under different angles of sunlight. The vivid and neat appearance create a contemporary office and retail image for the building.
