DESIGN NAME: Sparkling Ripples
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Public Art
INSPIRATION: This three-dimensional relief sculpture, with ripples as its primary creative element, utilizes various differently sized circles intersecting to form intriguing patterns and color blocks. Additionally, the stainless steel water ripple imagery contributes to a dynamic visual display on the wall, characterized by overlapping heights and a sense of depth. This shimmering artwork symbolizes the unceasing flow of knowledge dissemination within a campus brimming with joy and positivity, actively guiding students toward a beautiful, abundant, and hopeful future.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This artwork, conceptualized around the theme of water ripples, is crafted using meticulously hand-inlaid glass mosaic and stainless steel. Leveraging the unique properties of these materials, the piece dynamically responds to changes in light and wind throughout both day and night. Particularly in the evening, the mirror-like water ripples, illuminated by spotlights, create concentric circles of shimmering undulations, extending into the corridor space. This design transcends tangible spatial boundaries and stands as the defining feature of the artwork.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The colorful pattern of this artwork is meticulously crafted using handmade glass mosaic. During the production process, we incorporated painting techniques and concepts. In each color block within the same palette, we blended similar shades of glass. This not only enhances the visual impact and three-dimensionality of the composition but also creates a gradient effect. Additionally, the stainless steel water ripple motif, with its mirror-like surface, is suspended in space using only a central metal support rod connected to the wall. Through the vibrations caused by the wind, it complements the colored glass mosaic on the wall, creating a shimmering atmosphere.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2021 and finished with installation in Kaohsiung,Taiwan in January 2022

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This work uses stained glass mosaic to create multiple forms and color blocks intertwined with circular and vertical and horizontal lines. In addition, the image of water ripples with a mirror effect suspended in the space is created through stainless steel, which contrasts with the pictures on the background wall. The vibration of the wind and the reflection of light form ripples of light and shadow on the ground, breaking through the physical boundaries of space and creating a unique visual experience.
CHALLENGE: In the design process, I meticulously employed various sizes of circles and intersecting vertical and horizontal lines to delineate distinct formative blocks. Subsequently, I infused color to enhance the visual depth and three-dimensionality of the composition. While this approach may appear spontaneous, it is rooted in rigorous contemplation and accumulated experience. With a rational and professional mindset, I transformed natural environmental imagery into abstract elements imbued with subjective essence.
