| DESIGN NAME: Hanamushin III PRIMARY FUNCTION: Objet INSPIRATION: Kaijima Sawako and Tanabe Chikuunsai IV began their innovative collaboration in 2014. Kaijima is at the forefront of interdisciplinary research. Tanabe inherits the tradition of bamboo crafts, and he creates contemporary bamboo installations with a unique conceptual philosophy that redefines the possibilities of art. It expresses the vision of "advanced crafts"; it seamlessly fuses tradition and innovation and evolves traditional crafts along with technological advances. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This work integrated the two aethetic elements of mathematics and craft. It is named after a Zen phrase by a monk, Ryokan. He says “Flowers invite butterflies with no intention. Butterflies visit flowers with no intention.” Mathematical formulas are also attractive. Kaijima Sawako developed a software based on Enneper surface, by mathematician Alfred Enneper. And she draw it up so that Chikuunsai could cut the bamboo, dye, and make into a piece of art. It is a fusion of crafts and mathematics. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Sawako Kaijima specializes in the latest computational design. Tanabe Chikuunsai IV is a bamboo craftsman and specializes in traditional Japanese crafts. The fusion of traditional craft and the latest computational design is expressed by mathematical formulas in this work.
