DESIGN NAME: Parqal
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mixed Use Retail Development
INSPIRATION: Parqal centres around civic spaces of connectivity. Inspired by the social and civic culture of the city, Spanish-inspired civic plazas and public amphitheatres are carved out throughout the development to encourage social interaction. To enhance the connectivity and walkability, buildings are divided into smaller blocks akin to village clusters, creating more streets and increasing porosity in and out of Parqal.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Parqal is the centrepiece of Aseana City integrating Nature, Work and Leisure, promoting Liveability, Walkability and Sustainability. The 650m long retail strip is broken down into 5-minute walks between plazas to encourage space exploration. The design is based on the traditional Philippine architectural typology “Bahay na Bato” and is enveloped by a floating canopy that serves as the flagship spine of Aseana City that protects the space from the rain while allowing for natural ventilation.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Parqal is designed to be porous with multiple entrances due to its cluster building designs, which promote flow of walkability with the surrounding environment as well as with. Each building are interconnected via elevated linkway. Series of plazas and courtyards are introduced to enhance pedestrian mobility as well as promote interactions.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is started in October 2017 and concluded in May 2018 from Concept to Schematic Design stage. Phase 1 construction was completed in Q1 2023 in Manila, Philippines.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Material takes from the Paranaque’s streetscape palette, combing the warmth of wood, the strength of concrete and the sophistication of steel. Parqal promotes sustainability - Clustered building placement allows for cross ventilation. ETFE system used for the canopy is a sustainable material, designed for natural light, lightweight and durability, which functions as shading and weather protection responding to the tropical climate. Trees and water features are placed as passive cooling system.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Due to the length of the site, benchmarking analysis was done on successful retail strips - resulting in Connectivity, Plaza nodes (within 5-10 minutes walks), placement of retail zoning and destination, double frontage retail, small scale cluster retail rather than big box retail.
Research was also done on building type - Bahay Na Bato, a vernacular Philippines architecture derived from Hispanic and Chinese influence is adopted to reflect the local cultural and context throughout Parqal.
CHALLENGE: The challenge when trying to apply the key elements of vernacular architecture was to avoid the cliché of adapting ornamental decorations only onto the façade, but rather more Implementing the philosophy of the vernacular into modern take. The final product should be well received and represent a sense of connection for the local as well as tourist attraction. The plaza creation is also adopting the Spanish Andalucian plaza concept while not being too literal in terms of ornamental adaptation.
