DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Nest

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residence

INSPIRATION:
As a resting place for an old couple who retired in Taipei and returned to their hometown, Yilan. The design not only meets the owner's desire for the use of local materials as a jewelry designer, but also integrates the owner's desire for the childhood residence with black tile sloping roof, red brick wall, and overlooking Kueishantao Island. Moreover, the design method is applied to transform the required prayer room and let this be a warm light guiding the field.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
For the home of the owner and his wife, the designer takes the concept of swallows' return to the nest as the concept, integrates the owner's preference for the black tile slanted roof, and adopts the two misplaced slanted roof volumes, which resemble the wings of the swallows, as a personal residence for the two sons of the owner.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
In addition to extending the outdoor paddy field landscape into the interior, the designer also creates multi level skylights and patios in the building, such as the patio above balcony, as well as the skylights above the attic and the hall of the gods, etc., to create a sense of interest in the space through perspective displacement, and also let the bright sunlight of Lanyang naturally flow into such quiet residence.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in 2015 and finished in July 2018 in Yilan.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
In terms of the material, the designer makes the roof tile of Yilan's unique seven cent stone integrated with environmentally friendly recycled glass, so that the black and white roof gives out charming luster in dark night and becomes a bright light in wide field.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Not only is it located between fields, the designer also tries to extend the winding field path, irrigation ditch, and the rolling mountain in the distance into interior space. To this end, the designer designed a curved winding staircase in the living room, which is suspended from the ground, and a dog walking path for both sitting and laying down, as well as the stair landing that depends on the fluctuation of gable wall, and the attic space that is shaped by folding plate, etc., so that the indoor activities of homeowners are also full of fun and change.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
In the field of the owner's hometown, the designer echoes the image of birds returning to their nests through a unique spatial structure, and also makes the god hall with warm yellow halo, like a lighthouse in the ocean, guiding the direction for the owner's son who comes home to visit his parents. The project becomes a home in the field of strong enclosure, which not only integrates into the natural environment, but also emits unique temperament.

CHALLENGE:
It is located on the coast of Zhuangwei and the geology has the suspicion of soil liquefication, so the designer must pay special attention to the material and structure when designing the project, so as to overcome the corrosion of sea water and stabilize the foundation structure of the house. On the other side, the roof, which flutters like a bird's wings, also tests the delicate technique of grouting to avoid water leakage in the future.

The award-winning "Nest" is a profound testament to the harmonious blend of personal narrative, cultural heritage, and innovative design principles. As a design enthusiast, I am deeply moved by how this residence not only serves as a tranquil retreat for its owners but also stands as a beacon of architectural ingenuity. The thoughtful integration of local materials, such as Yilan's unique seven cent stone with environmentally friendly recycled glass, not only pays homage to the owners' roots but also showcases a commitment to sustainability. The concept of swallows returning to their nest, embodied through the unique roof design, beautifully symbolizes familial warmth and return. Moreover, the challenge of constructing a durable and harmonious structure in a region prone to soil liquefaction and sea water corrosion speaks volumes about the meticulous attention to detail and innovative problem-solving skills employed in this project. It is inspiring to see how the essence of the owners' desires and the essence of the local environment are woven into a design that stands out not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its meaningful impact. This work truly exemplifies the power of architecture to touch lives and connect with the natural world in a profound way. The dedication and creativity demonstrated in the "Nest" are indeed commendable, making it a deserving recipient of the A' Design Award in the category of Architecture, Building and Structure Design. This achievement is a significant milestone that underlines the remarkable talent and visionary approach of Fang Wei.

Fang Wei's "Nest" is a testament to the power of architecture that not only embodies the essence of a home but also interweaves personal narratives and natural elements into a cohesive and stunning design. The concept of swallows returning to the nest, beautifully mirrored in the structure's innovative use of slanted roof volumes, speaks volumes about the sensitivity to both the client's desires and the surrounding environment. The integration of local materials and the homage to traditional architectural elements, such as the black tile sloping roof and red brick walls, showcase a deep respect for cultural heritage while fostering a connection to the locale's natural beauty, including the view of Kueishantao Island. The thoughtful consideration in the design, allowing for a warm, guiding light within the prayer room, not only fulfills a functional requirement but elevates the space to a spiritual experience, reminiscent of a lighthouse for the family. Fang Wei's ability to encapsulate the essence of returning home, through a blend of personal memory, cultural identity, and innovative design, truly merits the recognition bestowed by the A' Design Award. The "Nest" stands as a beacon of how architecture can transcend mere buildings to become a deeply personal sanctuary that harmonizes with both its inhabitants and its environment.
