DESIGN NAME: Terra Firma
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table
INSPIRATION: Terra Firma is an artistic response to the modern disconnection between people and the food they consume. In an era of industrialised food production, where the origins and processes of our food have been obscured, this project seeks to bridge this gap. It draws inspiration from the principles of sustainability, ethical food production, and healthy living. It emphasises the return to the basics - to the soil ('terra firma' translates to 'solid earth') - which is the foundation of all life.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Terra Firma is an immersive installation and speculative design project that serves as a platform for exploring the relationship between food, nature, and sustainability. Made from sustainable and repurposed materials, Terra Firma combines the functionality of a table, a plate, and a little field all in one unit, fostering a connection between individuals and their food. The table surface is designed to grow edible plants, and it celebrates the origins and journey of the ingredients.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Terra Firma is not just a static installation; it is a dynamic and evolving experience. It is in a constant state of transformation, reflecting the ongoing process of exploration, experimentation, and discovery. As you interact with the installation and contribute your own touch, taste, and smell, you become an integral part of its evolution.
The imperfections and unfinished aspects of Terra Firma are intentional, serving as a reminder that it is always becoming, always in a state of potentiality. The installation is both complete and incomplete, representing a culmination of past efforts while leaving room for further additions and modifications. It embraces the beauty of imperfection and celebrates the ever-changing nature of life.
Through your participation, Terra Firma becomes a shared experience, a collective journey that highlights the interconnectedness of all things. As you explore the topography, taste the flavors, and engage with the materials, you contribute another layer of meaning and interpretation. It is through this interactive dialogue that the installation comes to life, evolving and growing with each individual's unique encounter.
Terra Firma offers an immersive and multi-sensory exploration, inviting you to touch, taste, smell, and feel the textures of the table and the plants that grow from it. This tactile experience deepens your connection to the materials and enhances your understanding of the lifecycle of food. You have the opportunity to discover the intricate relationship between our senses, our food, and the environment, fostering a greater appreciation for the interconnectedness of our world.
By continuously evolving and incorporating the experiences and interactions of its participants, Terra Firma remains a living and breathing installation, reflecting the collective journey and transforming with every new encounter.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Terra Firma project had its first edition completed in August 2022. Since then, it has been showcased at various events and exhibitions. It was exhibited at the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2022, Estonian Academy of Arts birthday celebration in 2022, Festival of Thousand Cranes in 2022, Estonian Entrepreneurship Award Gala in 2022, and showcased at Berlin Design Week 2023 and Clerkenwell Design Week 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design process involved utilising food fibre insulation board as the primary material, ensuring durability and eco-friendliness. The selection of materials was a crucial aspect, with a focus on natural and repurposed elements. Raw clay, natural carnauba wax, and biomass were carefully chosen to create a table surface that not only serves as a functional platform but also supports the growth of edible plants.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Terra Firma consists of modules that can be arranged in three different configurations: two rows of two, three in a row, or four in a row. Each module measures 600 x 1250 x 150 mm.
Terra Firma sits on metal frames, with each frame measuring 30 cm x 200 cm x h=100 cm. Depending on the configuration of the modules, a different number of frames are required for support. For a configuration of two rows of two, three frames are needed. For three modules in a row, four frames are required and for four modules in a row, six frames are necessary.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Helis Heiter's research for Terra Firma draws from their background in landscape architecture and food design. Collaboration with sustainable building specialists, including Krohwin, has provided valuable insights into the sustainable use of materials like clay. This understanding informs the development of Terra Firma, ensuring it aligns with principles of sustainability and responsible design. While the research process lacks a formal structure, it is driven by a deep understanding of sustainable practices and a commitment to immersive food experiences. Collaboration with specialists and practical knowledge play a crucial role in shaping design decisions and techniques. This approach integrates expertise into Terra Firma, creating an immersive and sustainable experience for visitors.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this design activity was navigating the creative challenge of using natural materials that could be in contact with food.
