DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Flora

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Multifunctional Vase

INSPIRATION:
I have always been amazed by the beauty of nature while evolving in time. Focusing on this principle I designed Flora as a tribute to the concept of metamorphosis of plants. Flowers and fruits are in essence the same thing, they are just at different stages of their lives. Even though not every flower results in a fruit, any fruit we enjoy was at one time a flower and those fruits contain in turn the seeds for future flowers.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Flora is a vase and a stand. A sculptural centerpiece that aims to help you stay present and focus on the natural elements that surround our daily life promoting an intimate relationship with nature in the domestic environment. A way to elevate flowers and fruits to the level they deserve.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The central vase acts as a pillar where the two round plates are inserted to create the stand. The glass tube accommodates water and flowers. It can be removed to easily replace or add water and to be cleaned.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Flora was originally designed in 2017 and made out of resin in 3 pieces in San Francisco as a personal project. After further development and adjustments in shape and dimensions the piece was made in a Luxurious Alabaster Stone and blown glass in Spain. The first Alabaster prototype was exhibited in Superstudio Piu during Milan Design Week in September 2021. Final design and production was achieved in 2022.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Alabaster has been considered a spiritual material helping to free the being and purify the soul. A material full of positive energy that can help us focus and connect with the simple pleasures in life. In love with this beautiful, translucent alabaster for a long time, Flora is expertly handcrafted and hand finished by master artisans in Spain using the purest Alabaster quarried in the center of my homeland, the Ebro Valley in Aragon, Spain. A hand blown glass tube completes the piece.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Flora is made out of 3 pieces of snow white translucent Alabaster consisting of a central pillar and 2 round plates, a glass tube insert and natural cork to adjust joints. Dimensions, 340 mm Diameter x 300 mm Height

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I wanted to create a piece that was a sanctuary and a spiritual home for flowers, leaves, and fruits. Alabaster has been used throughout history in architecture, decoration and sculpture in churches and cathedrals. As the opposite of marble, alabaster feels warm and induces feelings of peace and calm. Its translucency evokes the fragility of nature.

CHALLENGE:
Alabaster is a delicate material that can easily deteriorate with water. The piece requires a special treatment that helps to protect the surface without altering the beauty of the piece. The central pillar was originally conceived differently but due to the specific characteristics and fragility of the alabaster, the shape needed to be adjusted. Finally to create a smooth assembly experience and stabilize the connections between the alabaster pieces, natural cork is used in the connection points to prevent breakage and scratches during assembly.

The design of Flora is truly inspiring. Its multifunctional vase form is a beautiful reminder of nature's continuous cycle of growth and transformation.
