RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research Background:
For Cisco's CX/PX cloud product, we needed to establish an effective illustration system. Initially, we hired an agency to create the illustrations, but the results were not satisfactory.
Methods:
We analyzed the agency's output and studied some popular commercial illustration systems. We combined these findings with the unique characteristics of our products and the executives' desire to incorporate a racing theme. Finally, we established the current illustration style.
Tools:
To create the new illustrations, we used Procreate, Adobe Illustrator, and Figma.
Participants:
Yidan Xie was the primary contributor to this project.
Results and Insights:
The new illustration library has been widely acclaimed and is now used in many places beyond product pages. At the Cisco Live conference this year, these illustrations were even used to showcase our product features.
CHALLENGE: Although geometric illustrations are quite popular in the UI/UX field, we need to ask ourselves if this style is truly suitable for our products. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a geometric style? Do we need to follow this illustration trend, or can we create a more unique style that showcases our product features? How do we balance artistic expression and commercial needs?
It's important to consider that most of Cisco's customers are large enterprises. An overly personalized and artistic illustration style may not fit the usage scenarios of our products. Therefore, we need to carefully evaluate our options and create an illustration style that is both visually appealing and appropriate for our target audience.
